Ok I need some help here, I have 17 years experience and have been out of the business for 8 years and no one will give me the time of day! I have called lots of companies and nobody will give me a chance. I have a totally clean record on everything and plenty of experience class a CDL, plus 4 years owner operator, and they just say you need current experience. How can I get back in the business and find a good job?

It is the insurance companies that make the decisions and they want current experience. You will have to sign with a large fleet and go out with a trainer for 3-5weeks. After a few months you will be able to pick and choose who you drive for. It sucks! You will know more than the trainer you are with.

You have to go through a refresher course.

I have the same problem. Like the last guy said .... You'll have to take at least a 40 hr refresher course and then a few of the companies will take you. Around here a 40 hr course is about $1400.
    Good luck.

unforntuatley 8 years out of the industry you are now concidered a newbie again
like you have NO CMV expierence at all..
like above said and I had to do it too out for 6 went back to a company I was leased to years ago
he only had an 8 truck operation and signed me back on as one of his drivers.

I drove for a couple of years, now after 8 years I am looking at getting back in a truck as well. You do not necessarily need a refresher course. I know with Swift you just need to do a road test at orientation to show that you can drive and back before going with a trianer. They only require a refresher course if there was a problem that you need more training. From my understanding being let go for some reason, maybe an accident? I would imagine most of the large companies are about the same.

I was gone from 98 to 12. Came back in March 2012. Most of the mega's were demanding a refresher. I told em to forget it.

I found a local reefer company that would hire me no strings. Same as all other new hires. Ride with a local guy for 3-5 days and he'll cut you loose.

You're not going to find a mega carrier to give you a chance without a refreshers course.Try a small company but make sure their equipment is up to par.

What is your age? I knew a guy who was getting recruited by a mega, so he went, they sent him home, it would have been 15 years ago because he was 65.

Guy still pulls hazmat tanker for the small outfit he was going to leave, last I asked, which was last year.
