What do you guys think is the the best way to go about up grading my TX Cdl B to Class A? Should I go to school or just study and take the test? The reason i ask is cause I'm thinking about going local or over the road due to lack of advancement and pay at my current job witch is local County. I also have use of their equipment to take the test if need be. If im not mistaking if i go the route of just taking the test i just have to take the written and driving part for combination? One of the reason i was thinking about a trucking school is to get familiar with shifting again since the County went mostly autos, but i do know how to drive 8 and 10 speeds. Open to advice and suggestions.
Since you already have a general idea of what you're doing and you have access to equipment, there's really no reason not to do it on your own. I upgraded my B to an A recently and I just did it with my companies equipment, saved me from having to pay for a school.
have you contacted the texas dmv yet?like sirstealth said, save your money and do it on your own (if possible)
Is there a 3rd option :smt017 j/k (no im not)......... good luck on upgrading, don't forget to take all your endorsements (since its just another written test)
Thanks for the advice guys. Superpet39 i spoke with State troopers they confirmed all i have to do driving/written test with combination and tests for endorsements. Funny thing they told me is I can drive a tandem with a trailer gvw 10000+ and that qualify for combination in texas and to think i was going to try and use a lowboy to test in
It is harder to find an A job with out A school. Most trucking companies want to see class a school on your record.
Richter i dont think thats the case here in Texas. We have so many companies small and large that I think the demand for Class A driver's is there.
You was right Richter! Here's a little update since it was hard getting a company to hire me without Cdl A experience i decided to goto Stevens trucking school and I'm glad I did. Just finished up 3 weeks of schooling. Only had to take combination and driving test, past both got my Class A now will be on my way to Dallas Monday. Looking forward to the challenges that lies ahead.
Thanks, not yet. I was informed that Stevens will pay for them. Im glad if that's true, because the dmv nickel and dime the crap out you. Example cost me $11 to take the combination test. Tried taking tanker while i was there but said I couldn't till i get my class A witch is a lie cause u can have class B with tanker. Well after i passed my driving test it was another $11 to change my B with permit to A.
