Hello everyone I am leaving for orientation in Gary on Saturday and I got the packing list for flatbed and it does not say anything about packing a hard hat or winch bar. I have all these items as I have been driving locally since I got my license, but I was told awhile back that Swift wants you to wear a hard hat when working on a load and I didnt know whether to pack these items or not. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

No my father in law and I finally got the insurance company he is with to take me so I went ahead and started driving for him. But the main company he is hauling for is losing alot of business do to bad communication (go figure in this business). So I made the decision to go ahead and go over the road, I thought about calling Roehl back but I really dont see alot of there trucks run through the Cincinnati area so Swift seemed like a better choice and I have a few friends who drive for Swift so therefore I have more of an idea of what I am in for.

I'm not a flatbedder, but I figure bring the hardhat, but not any tools, Your mentor will have that stuff. You really want to bring as little as possible when on your mentors truck, It gets pretty cramped.

Thanks I was kind of thinking the same thing I just don't want to have to buy one out on the road because my mentor does not want anyone using his tools.

My mentor had all that stuff for me to use. They give you a hardhat once you pass the flatbed tests so to ask you to have one now is a little strange.

Thank you guys very much, I am looking forward to getting the ball rolling and I sure hope this works. At least well enough for me to get a year or two out of.

Dont take the hard hat with you. They will issue you a new one. You also won't need the winch bar until you get your own truck. They will issue you a ratchet style bar. You can put your own on the truck but keep it out of veiw when in the shop. I have been told that Swift will take your winch bar if it is seen. They like the ratchet style. Don't know if this is true or not. Just passing what I have heard from a pretty reliable soarce.
