I only have to pull a flatbed once in a while and usually don't have any issues with oversize. That being said, I went to a place in Manitoba where they couldn't get the load all the way on the trailer. It's a 53 ft step and we had 14" of overhang. I made a stink about it and made my dispatcher get me a permit. The guys loading it said as long as total length us less then 75' I wouldn't need a permit, I told them that if it's off the back of the trailer its oversize. What are the actual laws for this?

    Thanks
    Ryan

the actual rules vary by state and province. overhang doesn't automatically make it oversize. overall length is what matters generally. in some states you cant have overhang on a 53. you have to research route to get a perfect answer.

All states/ provinces have there own rules concerning oversize.....
In Manitoba you were right to get a permit. your loader was only part right, if your OVERALL length
exceeds 75' (23 meters) you need a permit
any overhang more than 4' requires flags and lights at night regardless of if you need a permit or not.

your permit may require a pilot car for "tail swing"

The rear overhand allowed is 35% of the trailer wheelbase length. 1 pilot car is required if the overall length is over 30 meters (98-4).

Loads in excess of 25 meters (75-6) with a rear overhang on a tractor/trailer configuration are subject to daylight travel only, with no travel allowed on Sundays or on statutory holidays.

    Happy Friday!

The only way to be certain with oversize questions is to google and try to find the current info direct from the state or province in question. If you go off of hearsay, you are going to get terrible info every time. Some guys have a good amount of this info memorized, but there are also many people who will spout off what they think or heard on the cb or at the lunch counter. In your case, here is a link to the Manitoba rules. I find these things difficult to understand and do not wish to spend the time to decipher it. but if I had a load in question to haul through Manitoba, that is what I would do. If your load is going through other states or provinces then you need to repeat process for each one. Here is Manitoba's rules, happy reading ! http://web2.gov.mb.ca/laws/regs/current/_pdf-regs.php?reg=575/88

14"??? Off the back?? Doubt that you would need a permit. Just flag it and go.

In my area, a rear overhang of less than 24" does not require a permit, but would still have to be flagged.

I run a lot of 60' with 10-12' rear overhang. Trust me.

Do your homework, son. Not all oversize requires permitting.

Most all oversize that I have seen requires permitting, now saying that, not all overhang is oversize, so not all overhang requires permitting. I run mainly in the south so maybe where some people run oversize doesn't need to be permitted but I haven't seen that myself.
