Hello, I am in the process of purchasing a used Pete in San Antonio TX and need to bring it home to El Paso Tx. 550 miles. I know I need registration, insurance, and log, but I'm not sure what permits or authorization if any just to get the truck home and legally. This is my first time on the O/O side but been driving 11 years. I will be operating under a company's DOT number

No signs of any kind required on the side doors as long as it's not used commercially. On big rig while you not assigned to usdot number you are same as any other personal vehicle. Except you'll have to stop at weight stations due weight regulations. You will need some kind of registration (temp from the dealer will work) and insurance coverage. And your CDL of course.

I drove my truck and trailer along with my personal vehicle loaded on the trailer, cross country with no sings on the side.

That doesnt actually mean anything. We've had multiple threads on this before.

Temp registration is available from the mvd and simple liability insurance from Progressive is all that's needed. Not a full blown commerical policy.

The whole not for hire thing is a myth. Old guys using semis to pull their big 5th wheels came up with it because they thought they were being smart. When in reality commercial laws only apply to intrastate/interstate commerce.

It used to be that it was an indicator of commercial but private carrier until the 1980's.

Huh. Good info. Im guessing that changed at some point though? Because Ive never been able to find any kind of info to legitimize the "not for hire" thing and the only time I seem to see it is on hdt's pulling around 5th wheels and some big toterhomes. Ask them why wnd they'll say its because their friend has it on his usually and that they just thought it was needed.

In Texas , get temp insurance. It will cost a couple of hundred. When you get that go to the dmv and get a 1 trip permit. It costs 10 bucks
