Hello everyone. I come here lost and confused about everything due to some real life issues that have arived.

I lost my job and there is nothing available here. Trust me I have looked high and low. Ive even went to McDonalds to see if any 3rd shift positions were available. Nothing... Nothing in the paper and the department of labor is backed up with applications.

I have a CDL and a clean driving record. I drove for covenant transport for about a year back in 2001 but I haven't touched a truck since then so I will have to be put with a trainer once again to shake the rust off of me.

But I have a wife and 2 young children (4 and 8 ) so hometime is very important to me. Combine that with the fact that I haven't driven in 8 years and I am in a situation.

Ive cried and cried over this but with the current economy and the lack of jobs anywhere near me here in Georgia...Options are thin.

First, how do I make this less painful for me and my family? Im heartbroken over this and so are they but we all understand this has to be done. What kind of technology is out there that will keep me in touch with them and how did any of you out there get over this pain?

Second, What company do you suggest I look into? I live about 2 hours away from Covenant and US Xpress but I hear so many bad things about them that really scares me. I have'nt driven in 8 years but I have a clean MVR and CDL and I dont mind being put with a trainer. Hometime is #1 on my list but dont get me wrong, I am willing to bust my ### in exchange for it.

Thank you for your advice. Im almost to tears as I type this because I know I will be leaving my wife and my 2 children behind. Not being here to touch and see them is going to kill me inside every minute I am away from them. But with the lack of jobs here, if I dont generate some form of income, we will lose everything we have and wont be able to provide for the kids.

First, decide in your mind if you are desperate or picky.

    It gets easier from there.

The technology is there for any kind of contact, from cell phones to video conferencing on laptop.

Im pretty desperate since no one is hiring around here and I have to do something. Above all else its about dealing with the pain from being away from my family. I do plan to take a laptop with me on the road and do video converencing using a cellphone company or something.

Any suggestions on a decent company to go with? I know none are perfect. I cant expect much though considering I haven't drove in 8 years

Sorry , but things aren't looking good . Why did you leave Covenant after "about a year" ? If there is something negative on your DAC you have little chance of getting a job . Thousands of people losing jobs think they can get in trucking . Wrong . Trucking companies have stacks of applications . Maybe if you gave your location somebody could suggest something local .

He hasn't driven in 8 years. Would DAC matter after 7?

I left after a situation with a dispatcher at the time. It was a confusing situation because there was a 30 minute delay in my quallcom for whatever reason and the dispatcher just did not understand it. I forget what the argument was about but due to the delay that they thought I was making up, it generated into a semi-heated conversation. I dont know if anything is on my DAC report or not considering I haven't attempted to get a job driving in 8 years.
