After driving for 3 years I should know the answer to this question. If I have to add coolant do I have to wait for the engine to cool down? If so how long. This is something I usually check during pretrip, but I have noticed that I have been eating coolant. I am just keeping an eye on it until I can get back to the terminal shop. I have a 2013 Kenworth T660 if that makes any difference.

Best way to go about it, top it off *motor cold, start it up and add some as thermostat opens. I.e burping the system

There is several gallons in the system. Just continue to top off cold, and write it up when you get to the terminal.

totally impossible for you to "eat coolant", but all to possible to "drink it"....

if it is red, you have cherry flavored coolant, if green, it is lime....you're gonna die

What if it's blue/green like mine? Our coolant is literally food grade coolant. You can drink it, you'll probably get sick but you'll live.

Not like cats on the farm drinking tractor coolant today and next week their ### is eating their face.
