    Good day all. Hope your paths to your destinations are safe and profitable.

    I would like to ask, what are your experiences with the TND 720 unit

    I have one I purchased at the beginning of the year. I basically got it for free. I used my points from Pilot and made the commitment. I had a Garmin (don't remember the model, wasn't a truckers GPS) and initially I had problems with it, but, that was because of how I setup. Anyway... Since owning my TND, I like the features of the larger screen, fuel tracking, different settings arrival times.

    The problem I am having with the unit is routing. One of the items I've noticed is if I place a route to the TA in Ontario, California, From the North East, I get a route that takes me down I-15 to I-10 west. From this point, the GPS instead of taking me basically 1/2 mile to get off at Milken street exit, it takes me several miles to the West and then doubles back and then takes me to the exit. Another item I have noticed is the GPS avoids HWy 80 when traveling from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, The unit wants to route to HWY 93 to HWY 50. then back onto 80. When I have performed (Newly feature) route comparison, I still get routes that don't include Hwy 80 (same example of Utah to Sacramento)

    Has anyone had these issues??

    I've sent several messages to Rand mcnally about this little issue and it seemed the last update about 2 weeks ago fixed the problem, but, it seems like it's back i a worse way.

    Let me knwo what you think

    Thanks

    I have the older tnd510. When I have issues like yours, I just tweak the routing options, faster vs shorter or allow freeways vs prefer major freeways. The right combination of these may get you the results you are looking for. Sometimes not and you just have to go with what you know to be the better way.

    No doubt. I hear ya. I tend to drive by experience. (Not alot, but for where I go, these items are generally the same. I noticed when I changed recently to shortest vs Fastest, I got different results which started out to be promising, but, then things seemed to turn for the worse. Routes really started to get wierd where Utah to California too 1,700 miles when comparing the route. I-80 straight across should be the ticket, but, this thing was creating routes through Oregon and was litterally 700 miles out of the way. (some crazy amount of miles out of route)

    Silly things like skipping an exit to double back is something I find crazy. Especially where there are no construction issues or hazmat issues or road changes.

    I like the unit, but, I'm almost alittle scare when it comes to going places I have never been.

    Still, the trusty old paper map gets me pretty close to the customer and the old phone call to the customer gets me the rest of teh way.

    I agree, but I always worry a bit when following a customers directions. You never really know if their directions are good for them getting to work in their car and being not very truck friendly. I always review directions given by customer or GPS with google maps sat photography. Another note is a GPS unit will take you to the mailing address given and the guard shack or shipping office may down the the road and around the corner from the mailbox. Searching with google maps sat photog always helps with things like this. I really only turn my GPS on now when I given a location I never been before or need trip planning info to avoid hos issues.

    REALLY????
    You mean to tell me all I had to do was prefer freeways?????

    Gees. I asked and asked and asked by sending messages to Rand Mcnally adn I never got a response to this.

    I tried to prefer highways and the route works.

    Man.. That was a quick fix.

    Now, i wonder what the draw back will be for this setting???

    LOL..

    Mark, thanks much for the suggestion/fix.

    I appreciate it.

    Let me start by proclaiming to ALL and sundry that I have ZERO affiliation to ANY manufacturer or vendor of any GPS out there.

    I have, in my limited time on the road, used the following systems:

    Tom Tom;
    Garmin;
    Cobra 7"
    WorldNav 7"
    TND 510;
    TND 710; and
    TND 720

    I think most will see a trend developing here... first of all, EVERY unit has tried to put me under a low bridge or on a restricted route.... that having been said, I have stayed with the TND series for the past 2 years... out of all the one I have used, it seems the most reliable... still lies to me, but the lies are a little more predicable and tend to be easier to catch...

    JMHO

    LOL!

    Well, I have to say, the fix I just received, fixed my issue, but, I did some further testing and found that I80 in utah to the west for some reason, get avoided. I I tried to get an alternate route to Ontario, CA and the GPS would not go to I80 to I5 in CA or I80 to US395 in Nevada or I80 to US93 in Nevada. The GPS Now routes about 1000 miles out of route. I'm talking I15n to I84w to I5s to I10e all to get to Ontario,Ca which is about 650 miles from here..

    Crazy

    Allow Freeways - tend to keep to US routes.
    Prefer Freeways - tend to keep to I routes.

    Again restricted routes and low bridges. Please post where they were in the support thread so that I can submit them to RM GIS.

    Thanks,
    Mark
