I have noticed people though the years have their trailers registered in a different state than their home state. Why is this? Is it to keep from paying some sort of fee or tax?
I’m looking to buy a new trailer, and was wondering what the advantage was.

I do it since Oklahoma started charging sales tax.
Perfectly legal -
Yep NC charges property tax yearly. And of course the sales tax....

We have a trailer bought back in 2001 that has OK plates on it, but I don’t remember the reason.
looking around on the internet, there are several states that don’t have sales tax, but I don’t know if the plates are permanent. TN (my home state) has one of the highest sales taxes in the country, but the trailer plates are permanent.
I guess I’m looking for a state that doesn’t charge sales tax, but has permanent plates. Having to pay FET is enough, and I don’t know of any way to get out of paying that. -
If you have a MC number you don't have to pay sales tax in Tn.

Maine is $120 for a 7 year plate with no excise tax, My home state of MA is like $175 for 2 years and yearly excise tax

I registered a trailer back in October. County clerk and state fees were around $100.00. This is for a permanent tag that is good for as long as you own the trailer.
