So I've been a long time lurker on these forums, but this is my first time posting. First off I wanted to say thanks for all the information on here, I've learned a lot! So here's my situation, the 3406e in my 2000 9400i blew out about 7 years ago, so I replaced it with a 1997 3406e 5ek without stickers that I was told had 455 hp and about 400,000 miles on it. The engine worked great until earlier this year, the ECM failed so I replaced it and had it uprated to 600 HP. The turbo was weak so I replaced it with a bigger cat turbo, and a little later on I redid all the injectors. The engine finally died this week. When I went to get the rebuild kit, they hooked it up to get the serial number.. The engine was originally a 375 HP engine, even though the engine has a 455 HP plaque, so I'm pretty confused at the whole ordeal. From reading on this site, I know that I've gotta do a ton of hard parts changes to get it up to a 600. My question is, should I get the rebuild kit for a 550 and leave it as is, or should I replace the engine? The engine I'm interested in buying is off a wrecked 1996, it's got the stickers and the paperwork showing all the maintenance records and an overhaul less than 250,000 miles ago. It's showing 475 HP, serial number 5ek88412. I'm getting a good deal on this along with an 18 spd tranny. The engine runs like clockwork and has clean oil samples and everything. Would it be recommended to buy this and put my bigger turbo from the old engine and use my old ECM to get it up to 600, or rebuild the old engine to 600 specs? I don't have the serial number for the engine I currently have installed, but what parts do I need to upgrade to get it up to 600 from 375? The truck usually runs with 110-140k on it, which is why I need the bigger HP.
id say if ur gettin a good deal then buy the other motor and tranny drop it in and motor down the road. it should be easier to uprate the 475 to what u want than the little 375
Yeah that's what I did, I pretty much got the engine for the cost of the transmission. The engine runs like clockwork and I'm gonna be dropping her in tomorrow. Anyone mind looking it up in SIS and see what the stock parts on the new engine are capable of? Again, it's 5ek88412. There is no way that the old engine was a 375, before the uprate it pulled real strong. I'm gonna be rebuilding it with a platinum rebuild kit and have it as a spare or drop it in another truck somewhere down the line
I did a 5ek just like that ordered parts for a 550 and out came aluminum pistons and in with the forged. The truck runs great,58 injectors marine cam upgraded turbo. It was also a low hp engine not anymore.
What kind of horsepower did it put down after you put it together with the marine cam ? The reason I ask is because I heard anything over 750 hp on a 5EK block will crack by the oil alleys.
