for trip planning/pay purposes, does anyone know how many more miles this detour adds to a run that is routed that way or how much longer, time-wise, that detour will take as opposed to running straigh thru?

Just taking a quick look, not running on the map program I have, it looks like about 60 miles or about an hour and a half.

Here we go again. :-? At least you can do that route this time. When there was a rock slide there back in 1997 at MM 1 , I-26 wasn't finished. That had I-40 closed for 3 months while they cleared it, and even after that they had only one lane in each direction for another 9 months before they had the mountainside solidified and reopened the whole road.

Here's a link to a couple videos of raw footage at the scene today. Looks like ole JCT took to driving right over the rocks.

I was about to say the same thing...here we go again.

And this is actually the second time (that I'm aware of) it has been closed down since '97.

    Thanks GA for the thread.

We missed this little event, in fact the race trucks in the video passed us. We were by that area earlier this morning lol. Lucky for us, not so for Jeff Gordon's care there eh.

Those race trucks were the Nationwide Series haulers coming back from Memphis last night. The Cup cars are up in Martinsville, so they are lucky enough to just come down I-77 to get home.

I did a little digging and can't find any other incidents of 40 being completely shut down from a rock slide since '97. And I don't remember any, just haven't found any info...yet. But today's slide is actually 1.5 miles east of '97s slide. That whole mountain is seemingly unstable. :biggrin_2554:
