I'm a recent grad. My wife and I live in So. Fla., and I have family in San Antonio, TX. I'm looking very closely at an OTR Tanker position that Schneider has available for drivers of all experience levels, and this is EXTREMELY attractive to me. Problem is, it requires the applicant to live within 150 miles of Houston and San Antonio is about 180 miles from Houston. I could use my family's address to set up residence in SAT and get a Regional job with Schneider out of SAT, but would prefer to set up residence in Houston and go for that Tanker job. I don't plan to live in Houston, but only work out of Houston. I plan on flying home to So. Fla. for my home time.

I've heard there are RV clubs that could help you set up domicile. Can anyone shed some light on the matter?

    Thanks!!!

I know this is an old post, but I was wondering how you handled your residency situation. I see your location status shows a change was made but not sure if you actually moved to TX or did it through an RV club as mentioned.

Escapees RV Club does that if you're moving to Texas.

I have no plans to move to TX or anywhere really, just thinking ahead to the possible issue of having a South Florida address when applying to companies as many don't seem to hire from South Florida if they even hire from Florida at all.

An ideal solution would be if I could have a "home" address in another state for company hiring and hometime purposes which is not the same as my "tax residence" address on my drivers license which I don't really want to change for tax and other logistical reasons.

I keep my domicile in "no personal income tax" states.
I've lived in Florida, Tennessee, and now Nevada. Texas is also "no personal income taxes."

That's the main thing, the other is the hassle of proving residency to whichever states DMV should a company not want Florida drivers in addition to the costs of retaking hazmat tests and background checks etc.

I am sure they are out there, it is just a matter of finding a suitable company that doesn't care what the address on my driver's license is and understands that I have no need to return to that or any other address for hometime once I start driving for them.

Companies don't care where you take hometime/offtime. Just let the dispatcher know in advance with enough time for him to schedule it. A company such as Indian River Transport runs all 48 states and probably doesn't care where you take off time. Same with Lessors, Heyl, Twiss. All these companies have central Florida terminals.

That's good to know, just need to find one that also doesn't care what address is on my driver's license when getting hired on. :)

I will add the companies you just mentioned to my list. I am not yet at the point where I will start contacting any of them though.

I changed my Florida Driver's License to Texas and registered my car in Texas, using my family's address in San Antonio. Then I got a P.O. Box from a UPS store in the Houston Area. During the 1st 3 months of my tenure at Schneider, the residency requirements were expanded to 200 miles. So I cancelled my P.O. Box and continued to use the address in San Antonio.

I plan on leaving Schneider at the end of next month and returning to Florida. I still have my Florida plates for my car and have been told I'll keep my Florida license number, so at least my car's re-registration fee will not be so high. What I don't like is that I'll have to, again, pay the original HazMat fees for fingerprinting, when Florida was the state in which I was originally fingerprinted and where got my initial HazMat endorsement. I have been told, however, that Florida will give me a 3 month temporary HazMat endorsement, like Texas did, because I already have a 5 year HazMat endorsement.

Schneider hires out of So.Fla for van. For those with 3+ months experience, it's an OTR (3 weeks out, 5 days home), slip seat position, where you are flown to/from the Operating Center where you'll pick up the truck you'll use for your 3 weeks OTR. They also hire teams out of So. Fla., but I'm not sure whether it's slip seat or assigned tractor. I'm inclined to believe it's the latter.

I went with the change of residency because I wanted tanker, and the only tanker location that was hiring at the time, was Houston.
