I'm a recent graduate who's been applying to Shaffer & FFE. The recruiter from FFE has been very helpful and has called me every day for the last 3 days to get me to go with FFE. Shaffer has pretty much approved me -- they just needed me to get them one add'l document (formality, according to them).

I've been holding off for the position with Shaffer, mostly because their pay is .34 per mile, where FFE's is only .29 per mile. Plus, I've read a lot of good things about Crete/Shaffer, but in doing some more research, I've been reading some "not so good" things about them too.

But, the recruiter from FFE says that they get a lot of Shaffer's drivers calling them because they're not getting the miles with Shaffer. The extra .05 with Shaffer isn't going to do me any good if there aren't any miles. She also told me that due to my home location (on I-90 & I-80 between Cleveland & Toledo), I'd get home a little more often because my driving lanes would be closer to home. Then again, I know you can't believe everything a recruiter tells you either!

How can you determine where your actual lanes will be to know if you'll get home more than once every 3 weeks or so? I'd give up the extra cents per mile if FFE would in fact get me home more than Shaffer.

Can anyone help steer me in the right direction on this? I've got to make a decision or I'm going to blow both opportunities.

    Thanks!

Shaffer, hands down in my opinion. FFE has a rep as being a bottom feeder.
I see Shaffer trucks all the time around Toledo

Go with FFE, I worked for Shaffer for 6 months and in that time they NEVER got me home on-time. It was 4-7 days after I wanted to be there. And that was with 2=weeks of notice. Then when i was ready to come back out it would be 2-4 days latter before they could find a load. At that time I lived in Payette ID. all they had to do was get me to Boise.

I witnessed FFE's antics first hand when I leased on to them in 2003.. They simply used you up and spit you out.. They have NO compassion for students, they are "a dime a dozen" at FFE.. DO NOT!! ever buy a truck from them. Countless students are blinded by the chrome, and paint.. and the lure of "making the big bucks".. They fail miserably.. If you need a stepping stone, sure go with them for the experiance. BUT have no illusions, be prepared to find somewhere else better in a year or so..

I don't know anything about Shaffer.. Though they are in Pa. right? A lot closer to home than Dallas, Tx... In case things go south quick.. you won't have that far to hitch a ride home or somthing..

Ffe and american eagle and lisa is all at the same terminal. They will force reefer loads on you if you are a dry van driver. They will short your pay check alot so look at it well. They have so many new people every week coming in to be new drivers. Why? Because the experienced ones are quitting. This is a bad company
