should I go back over the road?

So I have been working at a small local company for the last year and a half. I like the job, and it pays okay. However I was offered an over the road job today that pays nearly double. Have any of you gone back over the road after being local? Did you regret your decision? I'm very torn on this.

 

Do you value your home time and family?

I feel ya....but if you have a family then....well you know.

 

Back home after my time on the road, I can honestly say I very much regret my decision to go local. My job is good, my pay is good, my boss is a great guy. But I miss the life, I miss the driving, I miss the adventure and the danger and the experience and everything that OTR comes with.

That's only if I'm being honest with myself, otherwise I just keep telling myself to push on at university and make it through life until I get this degree.

Everyday, I daydream of driving a beautiful sea blue kw900l pulling a reefer load across I-40.
Everyday, I remind myself it will never happen.

 

And if not, then it's a no-brainer

 

the pay will probably not be double as often as you hope or have been told, unless your current wage is pretty low... if you have a family, stay put(IMO). good luck either way.

 

Put everything in perspective and balance. Job satisfaction adds years to your life. Sometimes sacrifices must be made for a longer life.

 

the general idea is to go where the money is.

but, being it's an otr job. requires some serious thinking. as others have pointed out.

 

Family is your #1 concern. I wish I had driven when I was young and single. I could've saved all my money living in the truck and gone all kinds of interesting places without worrying about how I was getting home. When you miss your kids growing up, you can't get that back. Losing your wife over a stupid job wouldn't be that great either and it happens a lot in this business.
