I was browsing the forums here and came across someone asking how to get their logs for a new company so that had me thinking. If you change truck companies is it common to provide your logs to the new company?
The most you may have to provide is the last 7 days, but I have never been asked for the actual logs. Companies are allowed to collect a signed statement from you about your previous 7 days hours before your first dispatch and this takes the place of the logs from a previous carrier. Now at the roadside the DOT is going to want to see the carbon copy of your last 7 days, or a print out with the new electronic logs.
How must a driver who is starting to work for a new motor carrier present their prior 7 days’ re How must a driver who is starting to work for a new motor carrier present their prior 7 days records of duty status to the new carrier? Section 395.8(j)(2) provides that "(2) Motor carriers, when using a driver for the first time or intermittently, shall obtain from the driver a signed statement giving the total time on duty during the immediately preceding 7 days and the time at which the driver was last relieved from duty prior to beginning work for the motor carriers." In the alternative, the driver may present copies of the prior 7 days’ records of duty status or a print-out of the prior 7 days from the prior carrier’s ELD system.
Only last 8 days Recap. If you are hired to a new one within that time. Old company will retain logs and dispose of them eventually after 6 months. I know of one who still has our logs and paperwork rotting quietly in a shop trailer out back to this day.
Any time that I ever change to motor carrier mine would always be off duty for 8 days cuz I'm taking the week off anyhow just because I can
Usually, by the time you clean out your old truck and turn it in, and get to the new company and go through their orientation and get issued another truck, that will more than cover 7 days. And you will probably have to long ON DUTY for 8 hours a day in orientation. Especially if they're paying you during orientation.
Unless in a pinch, who wouldnt enjoy a week or so off, before switching companies... No logs necessasary.
