Some help for a Rookie...

I am starting school here in Florida on Monday. I am excited and also nervous about picking the right company. I have narrowed it down to either Stevens or Roehl. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

Do they both hire from your area? I know Roehl has probably the most detailed website out there.

 

Hey there rookie234 welcome to the forum. You'll find alot of posts about Roehl and Stevens......some good ...some bad. My advice to you is to use the search feature to find the threads about them.....read some of the horror stories, and some of the glamour stories...and try to find the truth out them both.

The most important thing for you is to find the company that fits what you need best. But remember that going OTR will mean several weeks out before you get home. that is gonna happen with all the OTR outfits. And please don't believe everything the recruiters or the company websites tell you...recruiters are for the most part snake oil salesmen.

But hey there is alot of great info on the site and alot of knowledgeable folks on here too.

 

You might want to wait until you at least learn a little bit about trucking before you make any decisions. So many different types of jobs to consider. Also, the company you choose may not want you.

 

Wow, that was fast! Thanks guys> Yes both hire from my area and work with my school (Roadmaster). I have read a lot already and will do my best to make a good decision. I am kind of leaning toward Roehl, their pay seems to be better. Although I have read a lot about the quality of their equipment being sub par.

 

The school suggested these two companies as well as some others. They want me to have decided on a company by the end of the first week of school. I guess so they know who will be reimbursing my tuition.

 

I have spent the last 15 years in law enforcement and have a clean criminal and driving record. I'm in good health and can think of no reason why I would be unhireable. The recruiter at the school was pretty confident as well. I guess you never know though.

 

I would ask them why? You can get a prehire from a company but it doesnt mean that they WILL hire you after they do a background check...and then even if they do take you on for training it doesn't always mean you wil make it thru training.

Not trying to burst your bubble just stating facts. I didn't get a prehire when I went to school therefore I was on the hook for reimbursement.

I would guess and this is a guess that maybe they have a deal worked out with these companies to get them a certain number of trainees etc....

but that was a guess....good luck man have fun be safe

 

Good work history, good driving record . . . that adds up nicely for getting hired for certain!

Just as an FYI though, trucking company and trucking school recruiters make military recruiters look tame! Believe it when you get the prehire, but with that work history and a clean driving record, should be fairly easy for you to get hired.

 

They must have something worked out with these companies, because part of my out of pocket fees included a backround check and drug screening. This is why I love this site, these are all the things I need know. However, nobody else is in a hurry to tell me.
