SWIFT Student Driver with a backing incident on my 4th week of training!!

I still can't get over it. I was pickin up a load at a Con-Way Freight Terminal, I had a hard time backing into the dock, because of sun glare on my mirror, so I ended up hittin one of the con-way's trailer. I really felt like crap, now I have to carry this preventable accident on my DAC for the rest of my trucking career.

 

Bet my next pay check you didn't get out and look.....

 

Next time back up slowly, take your time, remember your GOAL" get out and look then you will be alright. Things happen you don't need no preventable accidents on your dac report nd dnt feel bad next time do it better, hope this help' be safe.

 

were your mirrors CLEAN? That can make a bigger difference also than to just G.O.A.L. Yeah it's important, but so is clean glass.

 

Also, another thing that can help is to take the time out to slide the tandems all the way back. That lessens the chances of you hitting anything without the trailer swing.

Like people say GET OUT AND LOOK,also keep those mirrors clean.Chalk this up as a backing accident and learn from it.Everybody makes mistakes in this industry,the main thing is you learn from it and don't make the same mistakes over and over,because then you would have a problem.

 

Good lord, that will lessen the chances of you being able to actually back the trailer into 90 % of the places we need to back a trailer, into, also.


Get out and look, and if you feel some resistance, STOP.

I don't know how many times I've seen a truck hit a parked trailer or truck next to them, stop when they first contact it, and then continue backing up, like they just backed over a tire chock, or one of the trailer tires dropped in a hole.

 

How much damage was there? Don't feel too bad most new drivers are statistically very likely to have a backing incident their first year of driving.

 

I can hear it now... Next time I go to a con-way terminal, the place will erupt with "oh $?¡7" another Swiftie" "hit the deck, it's SWIFT!" "run for the hills, SWIFT is coming!" And "what's the difference between a SWIFT driver and a toilet? A toilet can back up!"

A little goal goes a long way. In fact, policy mandates a goal every time you back and you're supposed to send "GOAL" on you Qualcomm. I've never hit ANYTHING! Know why? Because I GOAL when im not 100% sure about a maneuver. Including going forward!

And where in the heck was your mentor!?!? He's supposed to be spotting each and every back that you do and recording it on his trainee paperwork!!!!!

the industry hates SWIFT enough, we don't need to give them more reason!

 

LMAO!! Believe it or not man,i had those dock workers heads knottin'!! And bout my mentor, I just think since I weren't tearing anythin up thru the whole training he just felt confident enough for me to do this one on my own. But I get your point though... I think if he wouldve been out there spottin me, things would've been a lil smooth.
