I'm terminating a lease with one of chicago's shady EuroTrash carriers and returning the leased trailer, plates, etc. tomorrow. How do I drive home with no plates? They say I have to leave them there. Sucks because I just paid $1800 last month to renew them and IL doesn't do refunds.

Have you tried calling the secretary of state to see what your options are?

can you not drive home and then send the plates back to them? I'd hold onto something of theirs until you get your escrow money back.

I was going to keep the trailer but they threatened to report it stolen

Keep the plates...you have receipts showing you paid for them right?...I'd go that route until every dime is deposited into your acct.

I have the deductions for them noted on my statements.

Go to your local DMV. Each state has a temporary (few days) plates you can purchase to get you from point to point in a transition.

The plates aren't yours, whether you paid for them or not, they have the eurotrash carrier's name on them. You'll need to buy temporary insurance from OOIDA, and get a "hunter" permit. Call OOIDA and they can give you all the details. In the future, the best way to do it is drop the trailer at their terminal and tell them you need a couple weeks off. Bobtail home and then mail them your plates. If you're not going to be selective in who you lease to, it will probably be in your best interest to buy your own plates in your name.
