I am from the south, couple experiences driving on snow and ice. Looks like I might get some in my truck tomorrow. Picking up a load in Champaign IL going to Anamosa IA. Would I be better off sticking to I80 over to 380 then 151 or would the road workers keep roads like US 30 in decent shape? Of course, if i get to nervous I will be stopped somewhere and waiting it out.
I dont have too much experience in that area, but i'd say 80 since its a major east-west arterty for the entire country so the DOT there should be on top of things. But I've driven 80 from NJ to CA during the winter in a car and it is a treacherous highway... Its as if they decided to build 80 where the weather is the crappiest. Just go slow and do'nt outdo yourself
Stick to 80, if it's bad they will close it anyway, so then you'll be sure to have to stop at the worst of it. We do 48 states, and a lot of 80. Biggest thing, GO SLOW, you will see first hand the ones that didn't in the medians.
http://www.weather.gov/ Always a good idea to check weather reports before you leave and listen to radio reports while enroute. The above site is a good one you can point and click to various areas. It is probably best to stay to I-80.
To add to the above poster 511 is very helpful there is a 511 website too where you can look up each highway.
i live in that area, if you took 80 to 380 to 30 it would b 4 lane all the way. the weather is bad today with high winds. if you feel comfortable you can go north at hwy 1 north to anamosa lots of luck. not many truck stops in that area either. if you are mt now b careful of the wind. more snow and high winds for today lots of luck and b careful
This for the info. If I get loaded in time I will probably try to make Iowa 80 truck stop. Looks like the weather farther west is getting beyond my abilities. Better to wait this out.
