I've heard of multiple turbo failures in a year, injectors, egr cooler, fan flying of and breaking everything in front of engine (I heard a story where it started a fire),radiator falling apart etc.But I also heard its got wicked power when running the way it's suppose to so good luck.Never had or drove one although I want to get one but all those stories scared me out of it

Try to stick with d12 if possible but I've heard nothing but headaches from this engine that's not a good year for the d16 or d13 for that matter but at the end of the day it's just luck of the draw if you're lucky or not

I've also heard that the weight of the engine is hard on the front axle..steering and king pin components. I think it's a good engine, good reputation outside the US, but once again the emission junk suphicated it and turned it into a bit of a dog.

go with a d12 or d13. Ishift is the best automated transmission on the market.

The Volvo dealer told me from the mechanics on up to stay away from the D16. They said the D13 is very good.

It is the most expencive solution. Better look for D13 500 HP ore ISX. Avoid I-shift. It is good tranny when it is new, but with over 500K milage it may fail and parts are too expencive, especially for ATO2612

Stay away from any D16 built between 2007 and 2009. Mine is a D16 from 2006 and I've got quite few problems in the first year. Then everything went great until the last month of the payments, so after another 4 years.
The 2007/2008/2009 are a weird hybrid from EPA point of view. They have something called the "seventh injector" and works in conjunction with a huge cylinder mounted underneath the passenger side and is all made up to "save the planet". BS of course. Those years have nothing but troubles.
    U won't find a 2006 D16 for sale. But plenty of 06 to 09.
Anyway I love the muscle of my D16. Nothing compares with a strong engine at work when u need power.

stay away from a Volvo motor entirely! much easier to get a Cummings motor worked on. Don't believe me? before you buy, look up the Volvo dealers in the country...now look up the Cummings shops. rest my case, and by the way, I have a D12 with 912057 on it so I know what im"m talking about

ONLY engine you should ever get in a Volvo is a Cummins isx , simply do the EGR block off kit , reflash the ECU , and stay on the road worry free. Me and my buddy have a fleet of 10 Volvo's all of them had this upgrade done , 2 yrs no problems , no ecu faults , no egr replacements ,no DPF filter failing , no turbo failing . Guys its simple EGR system is the biggest crap ever , it heats everything up , coolant , oil, exst temp. Sorry i keep talking about ISX , thats because i have nothing good to say about d16.
