I can save 95 miles and about $75 in tolls if I route through Ontario from NY into Michigan. Can this be done without a lot of hassle, delay and expense? Is it even worth considering?

Delays would be your main concern !

The broker setting up the Bond would probably be more than the Tolls and fuel used. Then there is the delays re-entering the US, because we all know you must be up to no good if you leave the US to avoid the Tolls.

I didn't know if a bond was needed, since I wouldn't be delivering or picking up in Canada, just transiting. I figured that it would be more trouble than it's worth, but was hoping to hear from someone that's actually tried it...

What bonds are required to cross the borders? I am aware that there may be a bond required in favor of US CBP for customs purposes when re-entering the US but that be required for a shipment that wouldn't be subject to customs duty (since it actually originated in the US as in the example here) or is there a bond required to enter Canada?

I am having a hard time finding information on Canadian operations in one place.

It appears you have to file for CVOR registration in each province at no small expense ($250 initially for Ontario alone).

Does anyone have any good references for information on Canadian operations?

I wouldnt do the Canada thing as you would probably need an In Transit manifest and would need a bond for this, 10.75 to re-enter the US and a lot of un needed hassle from CBP on both sides.

Try posing that question in the Canadian truckers section of the forum maybe someone on there that can answer it for you.

You would also need to be licenced for ontario, and must set speed limiter to 65 mph or less. Not worth hassle to save that few miles, when you can spend hours sitting in line at the border

I've always been told by Canada Customs and customs brokers that I need a bond to do that. For 75 miles I would not even spend two minutes thinking about it.
