I see some people say yes you need the MC# and I see others say no you don't. I'm asking this for expediting using a 3/4 Sprinter van.
Is there a defiant answer yes or no on this?

The problem with that description is the "and".. It states the qualifier as being opperating in instate commerce "and" this wording seems to me the the qualifier means you have to do 2 things in that description to be required to have a DOT number.. Number 1 of course being interstate commerce...
It doesn't read as if "interstate commerce" in and of its self is a qualifier.
This is why there is so much confusion..
It reads to me that yes I'm opperating in "interstate commerce" but I meet none of the secondary requirements if Im under 10k lbs, not carrying passengers for hire, no hazmat ect..
The wording implies to me that interstate commerce itself is not a sole qualifier because "and" create a 2nd set of qualifiers. -
The answer could be yes.
If your involved in interstate commerce as a for hire carrier, then yes you need a dot number, what vehicle does not matter.

That's the same page I looked up and they have specfic wording of "and" , "or". When I read it I do not read that vehicles under 10k lbs need a number even if they do interstate commerce.
Example a bike courier obviously is under 10k lbs and even though they carry packages they don't need a DOT number. People delivering packages for Amazon do not put dot numbers on their cars trucks.. Pizza delivery people don't put them on their cars. All of these fall under the definition of interstate commerce.
Admittedly the bike carrier is not "motor" but what if they have an electric assist which is becoming common.. suddenly its a motor vehicle by definition. -
I did hotshot and some drove 1/2 ton trucks and some had mini vans and as long as we ran for hire we had to run under someone authority. You could do like some and put signs on when you enter a facility and take them off when you leave but if dot ever catches up to you it won't be nice . Plus when you get for numbers you'll need primary liability and cargo insurance . And most companies will require at least 100k cargo .
