Does anyone know if there’s a difference between frame horns and the front cast spring hangers on w900 trucks from the 80s? Asking because I’m thinking about upping the front axle to a 20k from a12k. I think I have seen some w9 s where the frame horns are doubled but I can’t recall seeing different from cast hangers other than some are iron and some are aluminum but don’t believe there was any correlation to the weight rating.

I believe you are correct on the cast brackets. A Kenworth W900 with a 12000 or 14000 lb front axle would come from the factory with a HFB64 steering gear. If the truck was fitted with a 16000 lb axle it would have a HFB70 series steering gear. The 18000 lb front end came with the HFB70 gear and a steering assist cylinder on the right side. The a 20000 lb front end came with dual steering boxes a HFB70 on the left and a 64 series on the right side.
You could order a Kenworth with the lighter axle and the bigger steering gear and Sheppard steering was also an option.Oxbow Thanks this. -

The front castings/brackets have threaded bosses where the steering gear/box mounts. Not all right side
castings/brackets had a provision for mounting a steering gear.Oxbow Thanks this. -
The one at the very front of the truck on the horn never carries a box on a w9 to my knowledge… please correct me if I’m wrong -
That is correct I was confusing the T800 steering gear mounting.
