I was reading Brandons thread and decided to start my own so maybe I could get some of my own concerns answered. Any help would be nice. I have been driving a yard truck for 2 yrs with a Mass state Permit. I lost my job 2 days ago I have been thinking of trying to go Regional or OTR depending on who I can get to help finance the schooling. The Mass test has a rep. of being realy tough. One big prob. is that all the "big" companies w/ training programs are nowhere near here. So I'm looking to "maybe" finance through the state at either NETTS or Tri State, but I keep reading about horror stories on here. Any advice from experience would be great
I would personally stay away from the big companies! Go through your schooling and find a good smaller company or an owner operator willing to take you on. Welcome to the forum! Good luck!
Yeah, I'm glad i found this site. Tons of useful advice (although wifey doesn't care for the amount of time spent on cpu) The prob with the smaller companies around here is they all want 1 yr experience. The only way I've seen to get it is to go with those companies that put you with a trainer and then on the road.
There are over 450,000 trucking companies in the US. You just have to do your homework. The companies that do less advertising are the ones with a lower driver turnover rate. This means the drivers are happier and stay put. If you want to work for a decent outfit you have to put forth a little more effort. It will be well worth it. Once you are over the road your wifey will look back on the days you were at home on the computer and really wish you were at home with her on the computer! I have a feeling she is not going to like you being a truck driver.
