My husband just called me to tell me he failed the Gen Knowledge test again in Oklahoma. This is the 2nd time he has taken the test. He did pass the Air Breaks, so thats good.

His problem is that the Oklahoma CDL is just not the same as the Gen Knowledge practice tests here. He routinely, like daily and usually 5-10 times a day when he isn't at work, is taking the practice tests here, and passing them with 80-100% each time. He/We practice daily with the CDL testing book the DMV gave us (Which is a ten year old book??) and even when he can repeat full paragraphs in the book to me! And he STILL is failing horribly on the actual test? He doesn't have any learning disability, He's never been a bad test taker...so we have no idea what to do. He again said to me today the questions being asked were question he had never seen in the book or practice tests here.

He only got 24 right out of 100 question test here in Oklahoma.

    What are we doing wrong?

ETA: The company he works for Alloy Welding supply, are the people wanting him to get his CDL-A. They are paying for the actual testing but no "training" or classes. I dont know if that would change the outcome or not. He loves this job. He just wants to do good by them.

Your husband will pass.Took me 4 times. He needs to study and focus on what he is reading not just reading words in a manual, focus.I tell people all the time to study the manual not the cdl online test because your DMV will add a lot more to the test. There are many more cdl tests then whats on this site.Type cdl prep test in the google search box.Nothing in that 10 yr old manual is different then today. My manual I got back in 2002 is the same one the dmv has now.

Sounds like he may need to slow down a bit.. the general knowledge tests are taken from the federal standards. if he is getting the practice tests down all the time, then something is going wrong when he's taking the tests. The tests are generic.

I agree.. your busband will pass... so relax... it will make it harder if he is worried or stressed about it...

Now, here I a wierd trick... sometimes we learn more by teaching then we do when we are trying to learn...

So, it may be better for your husband to explain it to you, rather then being quized on it or repeatimg paragraphs. .. to explain something we have to understand it.... I use this trick all the time when I need to learn or grasp sometthing... I actually pretend I am teaching or explaing it to someone... and it does truly help me... I prefer to pretend to explain it to someone rather than actually explain it to someone, especially someone who k ows it and is pretending to learn..
So, maybe your husband can go off into a different room, relax, and just pretend to be teachi g or explaining it to someome...

I know it sounds wierd, and he may feel silly... but, it works, I got through college teaching and explaining everything I was learning to my cat Einstein. .. I think he actually ended up with a PhD. .. lol

Again, I know it sounds wierd... but, we use a different part of our brain when we teachor explain something then when we are trying to grasp or learn.. also, we feel more confident in the teaching and explaing role then we do in the learning role.. and we do better with confidence. ..

So, dont fret... do let your husband beat himself down over this.... he will pass, he will get his CDL... and it is the same CDL whether you ACE the test the first time, or it takes 5 times... in the end, it doesnt matter.. he will have a CDL..

I read through the FL. CDL manual and high lighted what I thought to be important passages like braking distances, following distances etc. I then did the practice tests on this site as well as cdltest.co. I passed the general knowledge the first time however I missed more than I expected to. I found that many of the questions are worded differently then what I had seen on those practice test. Some questions I felt were deliberately designed to trip you up. You see a lot of questions like "Which of these is NOT true?" or "Which of these IS true?" Those questions are designed to see if you are comprehending the questions....it's easy to miss those if you're not reading the question completely. I saw a guy taking the test when I was there waiting for him to finish, the instructor told me he had been there for two hours. So relax, take your time and read those questions thoroughly. Good luck!

Try a Manual from a different state. They all have the same information.

Go through the entire test answering the easy ones, many times an answer may appear in part of another question. Remember it's multiple choice,,select the best answer by eliminating the poorest answers,,,,he can do it !
