What do you think of this scenario?

Imagine this scenario. You make 800 bucks plus a week as an experienced driver. You have 20 grand just sitting in the bank. You have no kids and hardly any expenses. You save around 1500 a month from your job. You, along with another experienced driver/mechanic are thinking about starting a small trucking company by purchasing one or two used tri axle dump trucks, 25 to 40k each. You both must keep your current jobs and find drivers for the trucks you buy. You have connections with an impressive trustworthy trucking broker who can practically guarantee that these trucks will be run hard round the clock. The broker will assist with dot compliance, finding drivers, insurance, paperwork ect. Basically all you have to do is take the risk of buying the used trucks. Does this sound like a good scenario in attempting to start a small fleet? And why or why not?

If it's so good then why doesn't the broker buy his own trucks and make even more money. Lol

If you can't make at least $800 week driving it yourself what's the point? Is your current job local? Insurance benefits? I don't understand why you wouldn't just drive them yourself?

It's local. Basically the question is can it be a profitable investment to buy a truck, pay a driver, have it run all the time, while having it repaired easily and quickly.

There's so many variables to this question. How much are the trucks? What kind of condition are they in? How much will you pay the drivers? You better offer some benefits if you want to retain decent ones who won't destroy your trucks. How much will that cost? How much do the loads pay? How many loads per day, per truck, can you haul? What's the brokers's cut? Insurance costs?

Nobody here can answer these questions for you. You need to put some serious thought into this. Put a pen to paper and figure out all of your fixed and variable expenses. Figure out projected income when everything is going right AND when everything is going wrong. Can you cover your overhead? For how long can you afford to cover it if your trucks aren't producing revenue (i.e. Broken down or you can't find anyone to drive them)?

Cool. I think it would be a big headache dealing with drivers and break downs all while still doing you're regular job.

I'm basically just an investor who gets a cut. The other guys deal with the drivers and break downs.
