Where do these new owners think that having higher gearing in the rear is going to save fuel because of the lower rpms on the engine?

Direct drive trans and 2.xx rears are all the rage.

Because the simple math says you should.

But as we used to say in engineering, if you thought it was simple, you don't understand the problem.

What most don't know about that direct drive 2.32-2.64 ratio is your top speed is about 65 or less at 1500 rpm.
    Happy trails.

It works in theory with a half loaded trailer at sea level on flat ground and without a wind, or on a test track that goes round and round and round and round..............etc.

In the variable world it's mostly about the driver.

We have one of those setups, Detroit, 10 speed direct, 2.64 rears (former Schneider daycab), it's a joke. About the only thing that's enjoyable about it is I don't have to drive it often.

The most important thing is making money. Not saving on fuel mileage.

You want better fuel mileage start by collecting used oil that's free fuel mileage right there. Even if you need to clean it in a cetrifuge first.

    jamespmack and 77fib77 Thank this.
