Hello Everyone, My name is Alex and I recently completed CDL school and passed the Ohio State exam. Right now I'm looking for work and not sure what to do. I really have no desire to go OTR but it seems I may have to for a while as the area in which I reside doesn't seem to offer much for newbies like myself without experience. I have yet to speak with recruiters but I believe I should begin to reach out. I would like to do either flatbed or long runs of 1000 miles+ per haul. I don't know what I don't know and could use some help from you experienced drivers. What questions should I be asking the recruiters I speak with? I appreciate your feedback. Alex
Since it's flatbed, ask recruiter how much does the company pay to tarp loads and do they pay anything for untarping.does the driver have to pay for lost or stolen items that was issued to me.if she says yes then ask her why ,doesn't that come out of your cut for tarping.see companies get money for tarping and you only receive a fraction of that.they say that money goes for binders, straps, bungies, and tarps.
You will have no problem finding a recruiter telling you about their 1000+ mile runs, just remember the average length of haul is around 400 miles over two days and figure out your wage from there.
Here is what I ask any company that is willing to ask me to work for them. This is a file on my computer so it is easy to cut n paste. Mind you these questions are more for asking about owning, not company. -Where is orientation? -After getting hired when is the first actual payment made to new drivers? -Do I have a choice of how to get there? -How are payments to o/o handled if the broker/ receiver fail to pay? -What is the base price on the truck? -How many payments on the truck? -Is there a balloon payment at end of term? -What is the cost per mile (not including your home expenses)? -Do you have an average of what you are seeing for income over being a company driver? -What costs does xx company impose on you for the o/o program? -If getting repairs, whom has priority? Company or o/o? -Am I required to have a company repair contract. -If I dont use the contract for repairs, is there a fee for repairs outside of xx company? -What does a repair contract cover? -What doesnt it cover? -If after a few years I am willing to set up my own capability for repairs, can I opt out of the repair contract? -How much of the repair contract will I get back? -Does an o/o have ability to specify what the truck is to have? IE gearing, rears spec, tank size? -Is there a balloon payment at the end of the o/o Contract? -Is an o/o governed? -What about fuel cards? Does xx company offer a fuel card with a discount?
