I just got laid off today from driving a beer truck. I worked form them right out of truck driving school. I was only there two months when they sold the company and let all of the new drivers go. I have an pre-hire from Star transportation in Nashville and Werner in Atlanta. My friend works for Werner (he is in training) and they told me we would team drive together after my training is complete. What do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

I would highly recommend staying away from the mega-carriers, but that's just my two cents.

With just a few months experience...you are pretty much at the mercy of the mega trainer carriers. In time you will understand Chompi and his post...correct, but you are between a rock and a hard spot!

Haven't seen much good about Star, but Werner as a team you should get decent miles...remember that as a team you are splitting what the truck gets in miles...so base your decision on take home potential pay...I don't know the pay rates at either company so a little research on your part will need to be done.....get a job for income now, then with time in, you can locate a better position.

I know a few drivers that got their start at Star and one even still works there 5 years later. Make sure you understand what you will make. They used to haul alot of heavy loads (water and paper) and you will have to adjust your trailer, from what I see on the road they take care of their trailers......sounds silly but you can waste alot of time if that dam box wont slide and at paper mills and water plants the first thing you do in the holding area is adjust your tandems all the way to the rear for loading. I worked for a company that did not maintain their trailers and spend many frustrating hours playing with them when I should have been sleeping.

That will have to be YOUR decision....there are many threads on this forum about both....do some reading and research....the ball is in your court!

Which company can get you home on a regular basis or within the time frame you would like??
What is the pay rate at each for training, after training and solo or team??
How many miles can you expect to get weekly?? (miles X pay rate= ???)
Equipment from both should be pretty much comparable so that is a neutral and I think they both govern about the same so....
Finally and most important... Can you and do you want to spend all of your time with your friend??!!!
Good luck wherever you decide to go! Be safe....

Go with the 1 you are most comfortable with , it is you thats going to be there and it should not be left up to the general concensus of those posting on a forum.

If beer drivers are being laid off, this country is in bigger trouble than I thought! Seems like an area as big as Raleigh/Durham would have a good amount of terminals.
