Hi everybody, I am new to the forum and work in the heavy haul industry. We just bought a Western Star 6900XD with a Detroit DD16. The issue that I have is that the DPF regen apparently only happens when traveling at greater than 30MPH. We rarely maintain this speed while pulling and the truck idles a lot due to the cold weather. The truck has gone into limp mode about 3 times now from not being able to regen (not good when on a jobsite in the middle of nowhere.) is there anything that I can do to help this? (delete, bypass, Etc?) thanks for the help.

You should be doing parked regens when the DPF lights come on. Do you try parked regens?

I was told by the western star rep that this engine cannot preform a parked regen without forcing it using a diagnostic computer. that is what they have had to do everytime so far.

Ok, I may be wrong, but... I think what he said is complete B.S.!!! Any truck with a DPF has, or should have, the ability to perform a parked regen. The manufactures know there are some operating conditions like yours where the truck isn't at highway speeds long enough to perform an active or passive regen, so they all have the ability to do one parked! Does you dash have any switches labeled "Parked Regen" or something like that? Do you guys not have the operators manual for the truck, and/or engine? Most trucks have regen info behind the sun visor. Somewhere I bet you will find the information about your truck being able to perform a regen. I think maybe what they are saying is that it cannot perform a regen while in PTO mode. In fact, the engine can be programmed to perform a regen in PTO mode. These engines are designed to be able to perform a parked regen. Do you ever get the DPF lights coming on?
Here is a good video about regens and the lights and operation.

The 30mph thing is kinda true..... It's just one of many parameters needed for active or passive regen.....

    What year is this pos.....?
If you can figure out how to do a manual regen. At best you will have to stop work and do one.
There are many Canadian members ... Hopefully they will chime in.

I would back a dozer over it...............

As far as I know, the newer Freightliners and Vovos don't have any switches on the dash to start a parked Regen anymore. But what I experience sometimes if there is a truck idling in a truckstop, the Freightliners start Regens even when they're set in high idle. This will be a problem now between you and the dealer, they knew in which application you're using your truck by the time you bought it. They should find a solution.

On Volvo D 13 you can do parked regen. Have to toggle around until the right screen appears and it will let you do one. Told them I had bad injector and truck kept calling for regen. After about a week and 7 of them they took to shop. They donked around and finally changed one of the injectors. These computers can make good mechanics forget basics and sound and feel symptoms. Get tunnel vision. I had driven this truck 5 months and could feel the thing. But computer kept saying regen.

I know there is no switch on the dash to regen, and I would go look into the manual, but the truck is in the shop for a warranty issue that has been ongoing since we bought it. The truck is a 2013 and I have been contemplating driving it back through the dealership's front door since we first used it on a job. It has an Allison in it and once it hits fifth gear the engine de-rates power and the transmission shifts back to 4th and pegs out. 4 months of data logging by Diamler and no one knows what it could be. They have taken the transmission protection off-nothing, they have tried different shift points-nothing. Pretty sad after dropping $275,000 on it.

These engines have to perform a parked regen. There must be some way for the driver to initiate a parked regen. I simply cannot believe your truck was built without someway for a parked regen to occur.
