How old does a new driver have to be where he's going to have problems getting a job driving due to age discrimination? I'm 41 and thinking of doing something else for another year or two and then starting a driving career, preferably beginning with a company-sponsored training program to get my CDL.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

My husband was 51 years old when he started with Maverick and did not experience age discrimination (he turned 52 on April 22, 2012).

I don't see age discrimination as being an issue in trucking.

I notice Schneider even has a "mature drivers" section on their web site. They apparently have partnered with AARP (I'll try not to hold that against them) to find "mature" people. I'm 63 and just finishing CDL school. Leaning toward flatbed and have one solid job offer and another pending.

Mid 40s is a common age for getting into trucking.

    I just started at 45.

OK. Thanks everybody. I'm 41, and I was debating starting in a couple of months or waiting a year or two. Sounds like I'm fairly safe waiting. Good. I have more options.

    Shhhhhhhhh.....................................................

They don't want you to know this.

Alot of the trucking companies prefer the 40+ age group !!!

    I have no idea why.............
