Up to now my restart would be a combination of "Off duty" and "Sleeper birth" periods, but I want to know for sure if it can be that way ,or the whole 34-hour period MUST be marked as "OFF DUTY"?

Yes, it can be both, but legally you have to mark when you move from off duty to sleeper or vice versa. I rarely do that unless I drive the truck somewhere for a wash or if I need to run for supplies.

You can mark it as both, I always mark Off-duty for the entire 34 even though I obviously may spend time in the sleeper, I did have a driver that used to always mark it as ALL sleeper, then one day he got inspected and when the DOT cop was looking though his logbook he asked if that driver had gone to the bathroom gotten anything to eat, or went for a walk in that last 34 hr. period, or if he spent it ALL in the sleeper, as he recorded in his logbook.

There was no infraction given, but the officer was trying to make a point, just show off duty period, then no questions asked.

I wish they would just make it 3 lines with sleeper and off duty rolled into one. With the way the regs. have been rewritten, allowing off duty rest in vehicle, I just don't see the need for both.

Probably just me wanting to over simplify an issue and my "less rules are better" mentality.
