Where have the miles gone???

    So i've been applying various places to get the recruiter run-down on various companies in the past week and here's what I've learned:

    Knight - Starts at .33/mile on a sliding scale, want you out for your 70, home for 34-48hrs. Expect 2500 miles/wk in the western region.

    Marten - .34 or .35/mile, out for 10-12 days, home for 34-48hrs. Expect 2000-2300 miles/wk :biggrin_2556: in the western region.

    Schneider - .34/mile, out 14 days, home 2. Expect 2400 miles/wk in the western region.

    Heartland - (needed 2 months more recent OTR experience than I've got and won't flex on it at all... love it.) Run your 70, home for a reset. .38/mile (I think), expect 2400/week.

    So here's my question. I drove on a Wal-Mart dedicated route from mid '08-early '10 and CONSISTENTLY got 3000+ miles, even had a few wks over 4000. Do miles like this exist anymore? I just can't believe that anyone leaves home for less than 2500/wk. Am I just expecting too much from wanting to run a western region route? Has the field just become THIS saturated with drivers or what?

    I'm in Northern CA so it somewhat limits who will hire but is anyone doing 3000+ consistently out there?

    One possible problem:

    With the economy this bad, demand is down. Without demand, less freight is moving.

    And I thought that may be the case, but I would figure that at some point the companies that can't secure a decent amount of freight would go under and that that point would have been reached by now. I'd think even the company would be hurting pretty badly if all they're getting out of trucks is 8k miles/month. At some point you'd figure they would scale back their numbers and keep what they've got busy.

    I run 3000-4000 miles a week, most of our drivers if not all get 2500-4000 a week.

    Just finnished working for Crete for about 10 wks, starting next week with a local furniture manufacturing company and will be driving tractor trailer regionally for them, but anyway about miles... I averaged maybe 2200 a week, or a bit less even. Twice sat for a day with repair issues, sat a total of 8 days waiting for freight and was slowed/stopped on two occasions due to ice/blizzard conditions. All in all, not a great experience but I realize winter and the current Obamanoid economy combined with what just might be "happenstance" in my case may not reflect everyone's experience. There may have been Crete drivers getting 3000 a week. Certainly trainers with students, of course, get miles...

    the problem is your looking at companys with like 2000 or more drivers, i know it sucks cuz of recent otr exp. try looking smaller if you can

    Now-a-days, most large companies are doing the regional thing, which means less miles. A lot of them are doing these 200,300,400 mile runs which actually pay the truck pretty good, but the driver still gets his .32 cents a mile. The problem is you drive 300 miles after you loaded and then spend time unloading, unless you can do D&H. You, the driver has to work around the shippers/consignees operating hours. If you get empty at 6 pm and can't load until 8 am tomorrow, you just lost $$, right ? The trade-off is you are never too far from the house and are home for your 34 reset. You can't get BIG miles and home time too, normally. There are exceptions.

    IMHO...I think alot of these newer drivers arent willing to run very hard...I work for a private not for hire carrier I usually run from 100pm to 200-230am sun -thur...I am amazed that after 600pm the truckstops are full after about 1000pm not many trucks on the road...depending on how many deliveries I make I get 500-625 miles everyday..looks to me like guys are giving up after 400 miles a day? granted 625 miles in a day in a daycab with one seat and no jake sucks ( pulling out with 80k every load) but hey thats my job...Im thinking those kinda miles in a large car with a lite load would be a piece of cake? maybe Im just stuck in the past ...

    Have you tried Gordon and Interstate? Can you go back to Wal Mart? That Wal Mart DC is pretty close to Marysville. BOL.

    The newbies get all the miles (lower pay) soon as you advance in pay scale you get less miles. The base pay of otr trucking hasnt changed much at all if any, since I drove in 1996. Maybe someday truckers will unite, shut down the country for a week and demand better pay.
