I want to get my CDL, and due to finances I have to go the company sponsored route, but almost every mega makes you team drive as part of your training, and I refuse to team drive under any circumstance, I don’t trust my dad to team, you think I’m gonna trust my life to a stranger? I live in PA, I’ve only found Maverick that doesn’t engage in this dangerous practice

Im sorry you feel that way.

You have to be able to learn the OTR trucking and freight will not run business hours just to accomodate you.

Yes it is most difficult to sleep in a moving truck, even more so with a stranger. That is where you have to work to meet, greet and get to know your trainer. If you two can become friends relatively quickly with common interests it is much easier. But that does not mean you have to take trainer home to mommy. Just enough to understand trainer is not a crackpot.

You probably do not understand trainers do not actually sleep. Your driving determines if they will sort of exist in a twilight between sleep and awake monitoring your driving. IF you are any good at all, they will rest a little bit. If you jerk the truck around shift badly, slam brakes or run off the rumble strip or gravel, then your trainer will be in that right seat barking at you.

Nothing dangerous about the practice as you call it. I had my spouse a full team with me inside of 10th day with FFE. By the time she survived her month with me we were running Cabbage, Donner and so on on ice and snow. Big deal. She did a good job. If you know anything about marriage spouses are very hard to teach and train correctly.

You already have decided you wont team period.

Fine. That cuts out OTR work. You go local with daycab tractor trailer work. You will be handed a load and told get going yer late. And then you truly will be on your own.

    Be good. Be safe.

@x1Heavy is correct on this one. You want to go OTR, it’s part of the package. I’m not sure where you get the weird assumption that it’s a “dangerous practice”..?
Heck, if you get a local job out of school, if you’re with a reputable company that’s worth looking at, you’re gonna go out each day with a trainer or senior driver qualified to coach and evaluate your abilities. Personally, I would be worried about going anywhere that just puts you in the seat and says, “Good luck, see you at the end of your shift.”

Schneider doesn’t team train if I remember correctly. I talked to a few trainers in Dallas, they literally are in the passenger seat any time the truck is moving. The trainee drives like a solo driver, only about 2 weeks on the road, and about 2 weeks of classroom/course training.

    Really
You might as well not even join the ranks. You need tons of experience and you are really clueless. My trainer which I was required to do 15,000.00 miles of me driving taught me lessons I still thank home for today years latter.

The better question is what company can I learn the most from with a trainer? Sure you will do a little team driving towards the end, it’s because he or she trusts you and your ability to make the right choices. Grow up pack your bags and learn. Period. Anything less is a career filled with accidents etc.

    Be Safe Out There

That 30,000 miles team driving or whatever is required by whatever company will save you the trouble of being in that 1 rookie driver's shoes who couldn't release the jaws of the fifth wheel lock to drop his trailer. You will learn some valuable things from someone with experience (hopefully) within that time

It seems everybody has misunderstood me, I don’t see why, being in a truck with a trainer doesn’t bother me, what bothers me is the company expects me to trust a complete stranger with my life to drive while I sleep

And no matter how much you “get to know this trainer” it’s a stranger, you can’t not be a stranger after a couple of days

I don’t know you, I don’t know how you drive

It's not a dangerous practice or companies wouldn't do it with $150K worth of equipment plus the cargo.
Make some phone calls and ask:
    Veriha Trucking
    TMC
    CRST
    Stevens Transport
    Jim Palmer Trucking
    Online Transport
    CFI - www.cfidrive.com
    Prime Inc.
    Carter Express
    KLLM Transport
    Millis Transfer
    Roehl Transport
All the above hire in PA for their cdl school.

Have you ever looked at it from the trainer's perspective?

So, I take it you also don't take trains, planes and taxis either. You don't want to trust your life to a stranger, I don't want a stranger with no training driving a 60,000 LB truck anywhere on the same road I am on. What makes you think you are so good you can do this without the proper training?

If you do get this job please let us know. I will take time off and follow you collecting youtube videos.
