Which Engine?

    Its for hauling crude, mostly on highway but occasionally in the bush (mud logging, roads, gravel roads etc). Trailers are B trains loaded to 63,500 kgs. Land is mostly Flat and rolling hills (Prairies). Whats your best pick for the job considering everything - but not least of which is MPG. All engines are 2014.

    MX-13

    Volvo built MP8 (In a mack cab)

    525 Cummins ISX

    Detroit D15

    Or any others you can suggest? Im buying a new truck right away as soon as I decide.

    go with cat. second choice would be detroit. stay away from all others.

    i can't vouch for the others. but i'd defenitly stay away from cummins. they're as reliable and popular as the ford taurus. JUNK. and apparently unfixable

    My first choice would be a DD15, then ISX. Both are about the same as far as problems and reliability, Detroit is a little cheaper on parts and IMO has better support (in my area anyway). Around me, good luck finding anyone decent with Volvo or MX engine, you'd be stuck paying dealership labor while they guess and throw parts at it. When it comes to Detroit and Cummins there are a lot more dealers to choose from.

    Cat isn't an option in a 2014 unless you're building a glider with an older engine.

    You are going to buy a new truck and subject it to off road ? Get something used WITH A CAT, to beat the dogsnot out of it

    DD16. For that kind of weight hands down. Around here , they are doing the best for reliability and mileage. Better then isx for sure.

    What shops do you have in the area? And who will work on what type of truck. Buy a truck with a dealer close by for simpler parts and less down time.

    Guess I'm getting a Western Star. nobody like Cummins. Funny that here, the KW dealership sells more trucks then all the rest combined.. including Peterbuilt, Mack, Freightliner, WS - Thats a fact you can sit on the road and count the trucks 6/10 are T800's w/cummins ISX.

    @Swann Im more concerned about saving $$ on fuel. Higher horsepower may save you money when the truck is pulling hard, but there aren't alot of pulls around here. You might get 1 every trip but not like we are in BC mountains.

    1-DD16 because of superior warranty and extra power
    2-DD15 warranty
    3- ISX 600 extra power but warranty aint the greatest
    Forget the rest

    Well if its fuel savings your after just get a dd15 then. Set it at a conservative horsepower rating and 1850 tq. Seems to be the best new engine out right now around here. Nothing wrong with a star either.

    Um CAT doesn't make and OTR engine anymore. He did say 2014.

    I'd go with the Detroit. Its a solid engine with the best mpg.
