I recently tried to start training with PAM in fort wayne, but i quit because i didnt like signing the paperwork saying i owed them $6000 or something if they didnt pass me, i didnt drive 1 year for them, or even if i was layed off. that also included the physical exam, hotel, etc. and also, if you read closely, your still on the hook even if you declare bankruptcy.
I liked CRST's program, a lot less money, and only need drive for them for 8 months. but i hear nothing but bad about them and CR England, and also it is all team driving, which i am not that interested in.
So my ideal would be: less then 1 year contract, solo driving after training, and school not far from michigan or north indiana, and reasonable school costs and re-embersements.

Check local community colleges and driving schools. That way you're not on the hook with any company.

You don't seem to want to get too far from home, so look at a private school then go with Falcon Transport. They have 2 Michigan terminals and haul steel on flatbeds & autoparts in vans.

the school is gonna cost x, whether you pass or fail. comm college is most likely cheapest way to go, if you qualify for any type of govt assistance. next best route is private school. many of those...before choosing one you should find out that companies will hire you after graduating that particular school (there are some scam schools out there). last ditch way should be company schools. DEFINITELY not crst, cr england, or swift imo...the 3 biggest crooks in the industry. (yes people will argue with me about swift. but they ripped off 9k drivers by taking their money to train them, and training them so well that they got their licenses suspended by tennessee dot. fbi raided swift school. was a big deal, and swift did NOTHING to compensate those 9k students. there are other reasons, but that should be enough to send anyone running for the hills.)

How about Schneider? I was at the education center here at Fort Campbell, KY because I get out of the Army next year, and I ran into a rep for www.cdlschool.com and she says they help hire you with big companies like Schneider and you get to use your GI. Bill? Does anyone know if they allow family or dogs? I was also interested in possibly team drivers as well with someone. My uncle told me with Schneider your just a number, but to me that woudl be with any company these days.

Stay away from those mega-carriers and you will have a lot less problems! Go with a slightly smaller company like Central Refrigerated or another company along those lines. No matter what company you go with if you go through their schooling they are going to have you sign some kind of contract.
