Have ans oil analysis done on engine oil, tranny and rears, have dyno run with blow by test and get an ECM dump. Then get a trustworthy mechanic to check it out. Go from there. Anything less you might as well flip a coin.
Take the least mileage truck for the same price. Also easier to get worked on with cummins over volvo engines. Rest of the truck will be bad enough as it is to get worked on.
Volvo engines have injector cup issues. Cummins you’re looking at a dpf and doc if they haven’t already been replaced. It’s a roll of the dice no matter what. Have money for maintenance.
As a driver, i’d prefer the ‘14 with the d13. Anything 2012 would scare the heck out of me. As purchaser, Neither one!!! Again 2012 to me is no no. A Volvo that is 1/2way thru it’s life is a no go. Make sure you get some maintenance records, oil samples, solid inspections & go from there. Listen to the folks you’re paying...You’re paying them for their professional opinions listen to ‘em.
What are you looking to spend? I’m not a big fan of either option. I do run Cummins engines though if that tells you anything.
