Why are there no scales on most of the turnpikes?

I don't think I 90 in NY has a scale, Ohio and Indiana don't on there toll roads, and the Penna Turnpike is free of scales also. What's stopping a guy running from NY to Illinois really overweight knowing they won't see a scale?

    I've noticed this too
NY sets up at rest areas
    So
I'm guessing the travel plazas are part of there weigh station bs
I've also noticed that alot of the toll roads you mentioned are tore up and pot hole ridden
Probably from people knowing they are less likely to be weighed
Only place I've ever noticed trucks hauling triples too

Triples are special. They are regulated where they can go and what can be done with them I don't stress about those.

If you had to build scale houses and then go through all of the stuff with herds of trucks it would add costs. I never see a scale on toll roads. However that does not mean there are ways to weigh trucks at the toll gate if they wanted to.

I don't have a problem with that. As far as running toll roads as a overweight, that's not something I ever did. With the exception of containers, however there was a permit weight on those at around 100K give or take. (Richmond toll route, I-95 back in the day) Or the Baltimore tunnel system.

If you know that you are overweight at the shipper or first available CAT scale, you will get that problem fixed before you proceed any further. If you did not, then you are not the Trucker you need to be.

Indiana has a CAT scale at the 1st eastbound service plaza and last westbound service plaza if that's what you mean.

Some of the roads you mention use portable scales set up randomly at rest areas and entrance ramps. NY is well known for this. Others like the PA Turnpike weigh you as you get on going thru the tool booth and your toll covers excess weight to a certain degree. A few other toll roads are private, or have exceptions from traditional weight limits since they are not Federally funded.

Scales are for generating money. They are making it off you by the huge amount they charge to run the toll road.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the PA turnpike has a scale in every toll lane. That's right, you get weighed when you roll through.
