Why do drivers hang broken tarp straps from their steps?

I've always wondered about this. I have tarp straps that hold the fuel nozzles in on my steps, but I'm talking about the drivers that have broken or cut in half straps hanging down off their steps almost touching the road. I saw a Covenant O/O today with them, and figured I'd finally get an answer.

 

I have wondered the same thing, seems like I have seen them just in the last few years.

 

Most companies make you account for every strap they issue. That means if they break, you have to give it back to them to get a new one.

 

Static straps, or just trying to be cool. Some trucks the driver can build up static electricity, and then when they go to get out, as soon as their hand touches the grab bar, ZAP! I had a Century once that would do that to me, I don't know why, it just did.
Most of us if you use them, hang them somewhere under the truck. I guess the supertruckers think it looks like fringe or something.

 

I thought it was like notches on the stock of a war rifle.

 

How does rubber, which doesn't conduct electricity, work as a static strap?

 

Even if they were static straps, Mythbusters busted that one.

 

Who makes you account for bungees?

 

Do you think maybe your ### dragging across the seat on your way out created some static electricity?
