And yet when I lived in Switzerland it was common as can be to see men walking down the road with a fully automatic rifle. Knowing that most every household possessed weapons seemed to be a good deterrent.

It is a shame that they decided to trade their freedom for the convenience of being able to cross borders unobstructed.

No, that was in 1948. The German Democratic Republic came into existence in 1949, so one year later.
Yes, the Berlin Wall was erected by the East German government, because all the East Germans walked away. They asked for permission in Moscow, but it was their own idea, made up by Walter Ulbricht.
Yes, he did. He asked Mr. Gorbatchov to take down the wall. Mr. Gorbatchov told the East German government that they had to change course, but they didn't. The East German population knew this, and Mr. Gorbatchov was very popular there. I remember a very nice anecdote from those days. All over East Germany were monuments with old T34 tanks, remembering the liberation from Nazism by the Red Army. Some East Germans had painted "Befreit uns bitte noch einmal", or "Please liberate us once more" on one of those tanks.
No, you live in your own world of poor knowledge about the world.
So you just can't find it, who would have guessed.
Please, build your truck like in the following picture. It is bullet proof, has excellent visibility, and the seats are very poor, but good enough for you:

Look you jerk off a vast majority of people who own guns here are honest good people. Don't be talking stupid #### about people you dont ####ing know. These are generous people who would likely invite you into their home and show you some real hospitality. Switzerland should have rejected the totalitarian overreach of Brussels. Trading their sovereignty, independence and self respect over a few minutes of inconvenience showing a passport looks like a terrible deal to me.

For what???? It is much safer to live in Western Europe than in the USA.

they traded it in for the freedom not to have to worry that some idiot is going to shoot at them.

I'm sure they are. But unfortunately there are also lots of nutcases with a vast arsenal of guns, who shouldn't even be trusted with a kitchen knife.
I don't have to know them. I see what the nutcases do because they can get hold of a gun as well. I seems you're not able to grasp that.
The Swiss know that there is nothing to be afraid of. Life in the US is almost based on fear, we enjoy the freedom not to fear for imaginary dangers.
