I guess some things are literally impossible...meaning no way possible. I just refuse to accept anything is impossible. Inconvenient. Not likely. But impossible? That's just hard to wrap my brain around.
If I pick my own loads, and I'm on a percentage based program...you're telling me short runs near home won't work out? If its % then "short runs that pay" are the best possible outcome, no? So why would it NOT pay? Why would I absolutely have to stay out 1-2 weeks at a time? If my short runs are paying the bills and I'm home...I don't know, maybe I'm missing something?

Fair enough. I believe that.
I don't mean to be rude, I just want to know as much as possible. I have no patience, but I don't quit either. I LOVE being thrown into the fire and learning as much as possible, as fast as possible because that's the way I am. Ain't nothing to it but to do it. Haha! So I say...
Truth is, I know it's something I can't just leap into, that's why I'm here, asking questions.
I appreciate it.

Comtrack is an intermodal company, which would work for you if you had rail facilities close to your home. All their loads are out and back, in and out of the rails. I live outside of Chicago, which is the largest rail hub in the U.S.,lots of "home every night" intermodal work. You won't get rich, and the long lines at the rails can work on your patience, but it sounds pretty close to what your looking for. Comtrack also offers a third party "lease purchase" option, check with them, see what they say. I too am looking into CRST Malone, wondering if I can get home once a week, or thru the house in the middle of the week. I sold my 379EH in 2009 when the economy took a dump, became a local company driver for SAIA, runnin LTL, home every night. I just can't get used to someone else controlling how much money I make, by cutting my hours to make the "companies" numbers look better, dressing you up like a cubscout and driving a different truck everyday. You probably won"t make a ton more money as an OO, but at least you have some kind of control over what you do. Make sure you have plenty of OO friends that you trust to answer your questions. ( lots you don't know yet ) Good Luck!

@Danmissouri I live in Chattanooga, I don't know how big the city's train network is but I know that's what it was known for at one point in time. It's still some sort of "hub", I just don't know how important it is, but hell...Comtrak does have a terminal there so that's gotta mean something.
Im like you, I was out for the 4th and this weekend, and I just want more say over that. I don't mind being out a week at a time, once or even twice a month (if it were up to me), but I would feel better knowing the money I was making by "staying out" was mine!
Ive applied to Comtrak. Like I said, with no money down and bad credit, I'm not sure how the third party lease would go for me. I don't know if I'd qualify. Hence me looking into companies like CRST Malone and Prime's l/p programs.

A short run to me might pay $600 wich is ok...but it will only pay you $450 (after Malone 25%)
Malone has a 50 page list of brokers you CANNOT work with for various reasons = limited freight in certain areas
I'm not going to talk bad about l/p but do yourself a favor and plan to dedicate yourself to more of a OTR/regional plan for a couple of years then worry about being home, that gives you the freedom to learn the biz without worrying about "hometime"
