$7800 ca-mi-ca
Looking for opinions:
I am a dispatch service (48 Flat Dispatch) and for my newest client (O/O) I booked this as his first load:
40' Container
30,000 lbs
CA to MI
Return empty container to shipper in CA
4375 loaded miles
$7800.00 for the round trip
Broker's first offer was $7400...I pushed for $8000...I settled and booked the run at $7800.
My client is happy, but I can't shake the thought "Shoulda got more".
Can I get some input from the community...

A container on my type of truck (flat-top) would have net'd me about 5mpg at best, no matter the weight (loaded or empty). I would have booked the run as a "loaded" turn since you HAVE to bring the container back to CA. SO $9,500 would have been the cheapest I would have done it. If the wheels are tunring, my average must be $2 mile minimum. The only saving grace on that load would have been if it had an open p/u and delivery date, that way I could find a LTL to fill up the other 8' (or 13' if a 53 trailer) to help out......
But hey, if your guy is happy then you did your job.

Is California that bad of an area for you?? I have no idea how outside load boards and freight look. CA is a good area for me so far, as the loads out there pay me around $3 mile and the one's coming back are in the $2.25 range out of LA and the suburbs, going to NY/VA/FL/TX. The one's to our honey hole (IN/IL/IA/OH) unsually pay in the $1.90-$2.00 range as well. My saving factor is getting OS loads out of Wilmington and Compton which are making me $3 mile PLUS my permits back. But as of Jan 1st, I can no longer go to CA unless I get a newer truck.... rates aren't THAT good LOL

Going to agree with Oscar here, that rate would only get the container moved one way.

Yes. Rates in CA are on the ill side. But $3/mi.? Contract, leased on? I'm working load boards for O/Os and the only $3/mi loads there are OD/OW or both.
$2.25 from CA to Nowhere, all day long...
