NOW IM STILL FAIRLY NEW TO THE SITE so let me tell you that ive been out here almost 50 years as an owner operator i have a thing about bosses i just dont do them.
now ive made a few post about being an owner operatoer and ive read the comment and there are a few that are concearned about making the change from driver to owner operator this is intended for them.

now first of all you can not pay any attention to all the woe is me you here out there or all the doom and gloom simply because it is all nonsense trucking is what YOU make it it can be good or it can be bad if its bad dont quit make a change it gets better.
now right now there are thousands of trucks that have been repoed all across the country you would not believe how many and there are several reason for that.
most of the trucks that have been repoed are trucks that have been leased to various companys WHY well when your leased to a company your not much more then an employee and when the company gets into troubel the first thing they cut back on is the employee they put themselves first not the owner operator by any means and you find yourself in troubel and the finance company could care less all they want is that high payment and when you get two down you can bet there looking for the truck is that right HELL NO can you do anything about that absoloutly not they dont care they want the truck period. and remember its 60 days not 90 as some think.

now there are some that will tell you that they would rather have a high payment then an older truck that they have to work on , well i have a problem with that first of all if your lazy and afraid to work you dont need to be in the trucking business, a 1500.00 dollor a month payment is to #### high and there are some that are higer but they dont last long as a rule in perticular in this econamy.
now its true if you gfo out and buy a new pete and chrome it out it do look good and as a matter of fact you will look ever so neat in that air ride seat but when the finance company comes to take it back it will break your heart not to mention your bank account if that happens its because of the high payment your over head was tro high and that is what gets most OVERHEAD.

when you start out keep the overhead low, and you cant do that with a new truck another thing why would you go out and buy a 150.000 truck to put a 2000 dollor load on it dosent make sense to me .

now you keep hearing that the day of the owner operator is over there going to be forced out it wont be long bewfore there wont be any. well started in 1957 wasent old enough to have a drivers licence i started because i wanted to drive and nobody woulld hire me no drivers licens and i wasent old enough, well i did it and the first trip the first thing i heard was the owner operator days are over now i was young and it worried me well a few day later im still out here doing the same thing and hearing the same thing , AINT GONNA HAPPEN now true a lot will fall but others take there place and we keep on trucking when things get rough the tuff keep trucking .

for those that want to be an powner operator dont be afraid of it , when you here about all the bad just get sstubborn and buy the #### truck and get out here on the big road IF its what you want to do BUT you have to want it bad enough to make it work it aint easy but it is doabel and you can be succesfull no doubt about it .

the key to succes is your overhead, high overhead will be your downfall,i have 5 tractors and trailers and none of them are new in fact the newest tractor i have is a 1990 conv pete and she makes me money every week and its payed for, im about to buy another truck, a conv pete and im buying it for 7000.00 it runs good and looks good and guess what no payments now it dosent have 10.000 wothof chrome on it BUT chrome cost money im out here to make money. and my old trucks that these big time drivers think are no good go and come every week.

if you want to be an owner operator the only thing holding you back is you dont listen to all the hype just do it if i can do it at the tender age of 14 you can do it and believe me things are a lot better today then they were back then hell we didnt even have power stering or ac back then.

best of luck to all in all your endeavers think positive you can do it IF its what you want.-----------southernpride

    Well said....

While I'm of the opinion that being an owner/operator isn't my thing, my respect goes out to those willing to make the leap and try....It's what America is all about....

I'm reminded of a novel I read once, about a couple who were driving an old cabover Kenworth that the guy had nearly $300k in... and he blamed his economic woes on Reaganomics.

Southernpride I enjoy your posts. I hate to hear all the negative naysayers these days. Now I haven't been out here near as long as you but I've been around the block a few times. It's nice to hear a positive person over all the gloom and doomers that just don't have the testicular fortitude to WORK for something that always tell you why you can't do something. Keep up the post and I wish you continued success.

If you ask if you should? The quickest and first responders will be the naysayers with every reason why you can not do something. Naysayers have been around for eternity. Successful people usually don't ask if they should do something or start something.

I'm from the "keep the overhead down" old school way of doing business. My Dad may he rest in peace, wasn't a trucker, but a successful building contractor nonetheless. He taught me these very same lessons. I don't want to play against a stacked deck when I start out, so I try and save whenever I can, without being stupid about it.

I worked for an old retired Navy guy in construction back in the late 70's. I learned alot from this guy. Most of the people that worked for him just thought he was a grouchy ### because he was constantly on everybody about taking care of the equipment and how they would treat tools. If you wanted to get chewed out all you had to do was drop a drill on the ground . He would put things in context . One day a guy that hadn't worked for us long was installing windows and shooting screws with an electric screwgun. When he finished with the screws he dropped the screwgun at his feet and went on with the work. The bossman walked over to this guy and gave him the speech I had heard many times before. First off he picked up the screwgun and asked if he knew what this was. He replied it was an old screwgun. The bossman went on to explain to him this was infact NOT an old screwgun it was the roof over his head, it was the clothes he wore and the food that him and his family were eating. He explained that without that tool he and his wife and children would be homeless, naked and go hungry. If you take care of your tools and equipment they will take care of you . now I know this may sound like a pretty extreme statement to some but it has served me well my whole adult life. I learned to buy the best , which may or may not be the most expensive, take care of it and so far worked out pretty well for me. Without an Ironclad lucrative contract with someone I could never see any OO buying a new truck. Matching your needs to the right equipment makes the most sense. I think Gears may actually have the right attitude to pull it off. Guess we'll see. Good luck to all who are trying.

Great post! It is very good to see/hear the positive side of things.
Hate to admit it, but I get side tracked by the gloom & doom sort watching the economist news sorts, but need to quit listening to that garbage & focus on the work ahead.
