VHF Radios

VHF radios are about three times the price of a CB...around $600 for a decent one. They cannot be self-programmed, that's illegal. The radio will be programmed where you buy it. You have to have a license, it was $10 last time I checked. There are what is known as the 10 common trucker channels, but in BC, YT, & Alaska you will want to make sure you have LADD 1, LADD 2, as the scales in the YT use LADD 2 for communication...if you are empty & don't need permits you just call them with your YT plate number & carry on. LADD 1 is like Channel 19 on the CB. You will find that most truckers in northern Alberta, all of BC, the YT & Alaska use VHF as the range is around 50-75 miles. Many do not have a CB at all...I don't.
