Code requirement

The FCC has finally dropped the code requirement for amateur license upgrade. The date it goes into affect is yet unknown.

Look for it to be placed in the regestry on 1/24/2007 and that would mean that on 2/24/2007 it will be law. (From the ARRL)

This means much more then just the dropping of Morse as a licensing requirement.

This will give Technicians, Tech Plus priveleges (The old Novice)...........

This means voice on 10 Meters from 28.300 to 28.500 as well as CW (Morse) on 10, 80, 40 and I think 15 Meters........

This promises to be an exciting time for Ham Radio.................

I can't wait, I passed the general written last summer but failed the code and haven't made the time to get more proficient. I am now re-newing my knowledge to pass the extra. At one time I could have aced the extra, but now I am rusty. I can't even remember the formula for antennas at this point

Im hopin to get in in march, and try for general. If I get the general, I still wont take full advantage of the bands, till I learn the ins and outs. My chief worry is how the other hams will look upon the nocoders. I dont like the prospect of getting my license, and spending money on a rig, and finding out some people wont let the code debate rest. As long as its done settled, and everyone gets along, and the elders work to bring us up in the world, Ill be there soon as I can!

Oh, there will be some prejudice for a while, but most will come to accept the fact that it is for the betterment of Ham radio. I was kinda leary about it myself being that most will just learn the questions and not know what they are doing. I see a lot more FCC violations coming in the near future. I hope that the code test will still be available; I would be interested in passing it sometime.

It's Official! Morse Code Requirement Ends Friday, February 23
NEWINGTON, CT, Jan 24, 2007 -- Circle Friday, February 23, on your calendar. That's when the current 5 WPM Morse code requirement will officially disappear from the Amateur Radio Service Part 97 rules. After midnight on that date, applicants for a General or Amateur Extra class Amateur Radio license no longer will have to demonstrate proficiency in Morse code. They'll just have to pass the applicable written examination. The appearance in today's Federal Register of the FCC's Report and Order (R&O) in the "Morse code proceeding," WT Docket 05-235, starts a 30-day countdown for the new rules to become effective. Deletion of the Morse requirement -- still a matter of controversy within the amateur community -- is a landmark in Amateur Radio history.

For those who wondered;

There will be some who magicly will know that you are a no coder, fewer will refuse to talk to you on the radio. A very small percentage may actually ridicule you on the radio.............
I wouldn't worry about those guys....soon the no coders will out number the jerks who will think they are better then you.............

I have recently moved to Wyoming and ran into a neighbor here that is a ham, He didnt seem real wild about the no code requirement, but I contacted the club secretary here and he was absolutely wonderful. They werent planning any test sessions, but he said they would arrange one for me. I told him to wait until after Feb 23, just to make things easier and he agreed. So I will have my ticket after that. He made me feel real welcome. I can hardly wait.

I'm attending a workshop of Feb 24th and 25th which ends in taking the tests. t's the techs class first but they also do the general so I may just take the tech class soon and then upgrade during the class. I'v passed the practice tests regularily but I want to learn something mor than just the answers to the tests which is basicly what I know now. I'v memorized all the questions on the different practice tests but some of it I have no idea what it is!!
