Which One???

i know some guys with the 148 i actually know 1 guy with 2 148's one for mobile and base. it is a very reliable radio. sounds good, The Galaxy dx 959 i know a few with it as well, as well as me. I have mine tuned up it swings to about 30w (this is after the mod) it is a great radio. just as reliable, they really are pretty close to the same. im talking about sideband usage. But lets put it this way. the dx959 is really shows what its made of on AM the regular 40 channels. if you plan on going on sideband as a normal thing, go with the 148, Reason i say this is the 959 drifts a LITTLE bit on side band in extreme weather. also the 959 has a 4 digit frequency counter, its SO annoying. you really need that 5th digit for sideband. if you get the right 148 you can get the 5 digit. so i mean here are my suggestions summed up.

if you want to talk on sideband go with the 148
if you wanna go on AM standard 40 go with the 959
OR they are similar enough where you could just go with personal preference. (949 has an input for freq counter so you can put a 5 or 6 digit counter on it.)

 

I recently bought a cobra 148. How do you go about finding active channels on the sideband?

 

monitor the channels above 35 on lower side band, normally where i go theirs talk on at least some of the channels 38 and 39 are big. make sure you can work that clarifier


when you find the conversations, dont break in with "breaker" or "HEY!?!" chances are youll do it with "qsk" the guys around me are very loose and accepting but do use some q codes. easy to look up, and good to know. youll be surprised how far you can talk, especially when skip rolls in... i know its not ham, but it is still pretty darn good
