Hello everyone
I'm pretty new to the forum and pretty excited to be here. My question is pretty specific and I"m hoping I'm not reposting something already discussed. I did a search and did not see anything specifically related to Central Refrigerated and CPAP requirements.
A little background...
Was prescribed a CPAP a few years back, about 3 or 4, when I had insurance. Went for my sleep study, was prescribed a CPAP which I received but once I had it I didn't use it. Yes, that was stupid but at the time I was embarassed in front of my new bride to have a machine and all it's glorious hoses and cord hooked up to me. My mistake. I eventually returned the CPAP to where it was being leased. Now moving on to almost the present...
About 3 months ago, after gaining tons of weight over a few years of unemployment and underemployment, I found myself at one of life's milestones. I went out and bought a CPAP off of Craigslist. I never had it dialed it by a doctor (no insurance and no money) but used it as it was with the previous users settings. It has worked wonderfully for me and I get wonderful rest that I have never experienced.
Along with using the CPAP I dropped almost 70 lbs. total but still have a little over a hundred (I'm 283 as of yesterday) lbs. to go for my target weight. I have put off training and working for Central Refrigerated because I do not want any hiccups in the whole process. I don't want to fail anything because this is my future and I haven't been this excited about any career in a very long time.
My concern is that the DOT doctor is going to see my weight (I don't think I really look as fat as my weight illustrates) and order me to perform another sleep study. Not only am I living on the financial edge but trying to save up my own pocket money for another sleep study will take forever and will undoubtedly delay these plans I have already delayed long enough. I work out at the gym every other day doing a decent amount of weights to build some lean muscle usually followed by some cardio. So far my tremendous diet change and exercise has been very successful and I have no plans on stopping, even when I drive. I will reach my goal regardless of what it takes. I do not lack determination. But, I do not want any setbacks and want to forsee any problems.
Tentatively I am planning on my Central Refrigerated new career beginning in about 4 weeks. By then I plan on being as close to 250 as possible by that time with my target weight being 175-190 depending on muscle mass, etc.
Please help! Does anyone know Central Refrigerated's policy or whether the DOT physical will most likely require me to take another sleep study (again, my last one which I have proof of was about 3-4 years ago)?
Sorry if this is some kind of repost. You guys and gals here are awesome and I can't wait to get on the road with you'se (Jersey vernacular). Any info. would be appreciated as it pertains to Central Refrigerated.
Thanks again!

That would be a good question for the recruiter... When Hubby and I went through everything, it wasn't even a question they asked, but the climate has changed in only the two years its been for us...

when you were prescribed a CPAP a few years ago, did the doctor notify your state DOT?
In my province they do, so theres a paper trail for somebody to follow. -
I have no knowledge of Central Refrigerator's policy, nor do I drove a truck, but I have used a cpap for that last 8 years. If they don't require you to have a sleep study you should take one as soon as you have insurance. As you have noticed using the cpap makes a huge difference in you health and ability to get too and maintain a healthy weight, plus it can significantly lower chances of a heart attack for those with sleep apnea. I wish you good success with your new career and congrats on loosing the weight and becoming more healthy.

Karhaulr....
No, they didn't notify the DOT or anyone because I wasn't driving or interested in driving. I just had the sleep study and was prescribed and received a CPAP.
I do have the paperwork from the sleep study however. My biggest concern is the doctor believing me that I use the CPAP regularly, that I am getting healthier by the day and that I won't be a threat to anyone on the road.
I plan on bringing the CPAP with me to Utah and I plan on continuing to use it no matter where I am, including when I have to sleep in the truck. -
CDAT...
Thanks! It has definitely been a life saver for me. I think people respond to a heavier weight differently. I have seen people that are heavy/fat/obese but they carry it well and move around freely. I definitely wasn't one of those people and knowing my body I probably only had a couple of years left if I continued at the weight I was at.
Thanks again for the support! -
Lady K...
I'm glad to hear they hadn't asked. I'm hoping that it is the same way when I take the physical. I'm averaging about 5 lbs down per week right now and hopefully in about a month to six weeks, I'll be much closer to a healthier weight and it won't even be brought up. Keeping my fingers crossed... -
Sorry, one more question for you guys and gals...
Do you think the trainer, when I'm out on the road sharing the truck with the trainer, will mind or have any issues with me plugging in my CPAP when I sleep? What if he has something else plugged into the outlet like a refrigerator? Is there more than one outlet typically? -
I doubt he would mind, as its a safety issue. I'd rather a guy get propper sleep, than have a cooler running.
each truck set up is different, but you will have a 12 volt plug in the sleeper, some might have a 110ac from an inverter, so bring both cords with you. -
