Not sure how is wrong here? I would think you would be greatfull they are willing to work with your medical condition, on the other hand I understand you need to make money. This is a two way situation. Maybe you could call them and explain you was restless for miles and over reacted, could they get you a truck ready for when you leave orientation as to waiting 2 weeks. Maybe there is another company that will work around the medical needs?
I have not heard of my company doing this, however I am not sure to be honest. We might?

sleep apnea

for the two weeks I wasn't able to use I kept blowing fuses so that I could sleep at night. Schneider would not take care of the issues with me getting a good night sleep using my C-Pap

I have Sleep APNEA and have used a CPAP for ten years. I am 49 and a Cass B Straight Truck driver that is about to get his Class A CDL. What types (Models) of CPAPs do you all use on the road. Does anyone out there successfully use any other devices to treat their Sleep APNEA? Thanks for the responses!

I know the dangers of sleep driving. I've done it myself but not since I started using my CPAP. I weigh 250 and stand 6'2". I got the CPAP because my ex griped about my snoring. I am soon to be a NEWBIE driver and want to know if any of you use a dental device for your sleep apnea and if so how good is it? Thanks for the replies!

Has anyone had the surgery for Sleep Apnea and what's been your experience with it? How long did it take and the recovery period? Problems you have with it now?

In the May issue of Truckers News you had a short article titled “Obesity Linked to Sleep Apnea in Drivers,” which quoted Dr. Philip Parks on several points.

In the May issue of Truckers News you had a short article titled “Obesity Linked to Sleep Apnea in Drivers,” which quoted Dr. Philip Parks on several points.

“Truck drivers with sleep apnea have up to a seven-fold increased risk of being involved in a motor vehicle crash.” This statement is not supported by studies done on commercial motor vehicle operators. Most of the research finding an increased risk of crash has been done on the general driving population. Of the few studies done on truck drivers one literature review found two out of three studies showed truck drivers to not have increased crash rates. One FMCSA technical review of Dr. Parks’ work found “no statistical correlation to support the hypothesis of a link between sleep apnea and increased crash risk.”

The actual study referred to in your article involved drivers who went to an occupational health clinic for their DOT physical. Without being asked or given a chance to not participate in the study they were given a more rigorous screening for sleep apnea than DOT regulations require. More than half failed and were required to get a $2,000 sleep study before being given a medical certificate. The study did not look at accident rates in any way. The study was a “field test” of a more rigorous screening policy for sleep apnea. The researchers did not even fund or offer assistance in getting sleep apnea testing to the drivers who were “flunked” on their DOT medical exam as part of the study. About half the drivers flunked were new hires who did not yet have medical insurance coverage.

With the ongoing debate about requiring testing for sleep apnea as part of the DOT medical exam, I would hope an industry publication such as Truckers News would do a better job providing a balanced article on the topic.

Be sure to check into dental appliances and surgery a LOT more before you decide to go with that. As a truck driver you need to meet DOT medical guidelines. Right notsurgery and dental appliances are NOT considered effective treatment options as the doctors can not confirm the treatment was effective.

Uncer current guidelines (check the FMCSA Medical Review Board Jan 2008 meting minutes) CPAP treatment with compliance data recording is the only way to document the "current and effective treatment" needed to get a DOT medical card.

IF you want more technical informaiton about OSA - surgery or dental appliances check out the American Sleep Apnea Association web site and forums.. They have lots more technical information about sleep apnea.. but remember they are not truck drivers and don't know FMCSA medical.

Good Luck
