The automotive distribution chain came within weeks of meltdown this summer as Germany prepared to impose road tolls for trucks.
Logistics companies faced a tax hike that would increase operating costs more than 10 percent. With margins already tight, many could have failed because automaker customers were generally refusing to allow trucking companies to pass along the added cost.
But three things happened to avert a crisis.
* Germany delayed the road toll's September 1 introduction to November 1.
* The tolls were cut to an average 12 cents per kilometer from 18 cents.
* Automakers finally consented to pay the added costs.
