I don't live off of the dollar menu or beanie weenies.
I had a stroke 18 months ago...not a "major" one. What did they call it....a TIA? So I completely understand that being in excellent shape, as the doctors repeatedly tell me, doesn't matter. Other aspects of your life can affect your health way more than just what you eat.
But I sure ain't gonna eat all or even the majority of my meals in fast food joints or truck stop restaurants. I make my own food or heat up what I've brought from the house that my wife made. It's not that difficult.
Drivers can do as they wish. But personally, I still say I don't see how someone can spend a couple hundred bucks a week living expenses on the road. I have bills and a family at home....even if I didn't, I just couldn't let myself be like that.
Dont believe the new drivers

I budget $100/week for living expenses on the road...food, drinks, and cigarettes...and I don't spend even that much usually.

I do the same, and I usually come home with at least $20 left.
And as for food, I only eat Subway breakfast and I get eggs and bacon for dinner at the TA. Protein is your best friend when your just sitting all day as it causes your brain to secret something that makes you not hungry (I read that somewhere) and it works for me. Ever since starting this diet and quitting soda I have lost 45lbs -
WOW... I just read through all 19 pages, well skimmed after awhile... If yall hate driving so much, I know of a place thats hiring... I left a steady, decent paying job to come out on the road. Went through the company school, save your negative comments as I dont care, to get my CDL. Did I enjoy every minute, no. Would I go back to working somewhere else, no. Once I got my CDL I was garanteed atleast $600 a week. I went solo a couple weeks ago. First full week was over 2500 miles, and that was with trying to get me home to the boondocks of Alabama. I love being on the road. If I didnt do this I would have missed out on many experiences I treasure. Since May Ive been in every state except Vermont. Never wouldve seen this country if it wasnt for driving. I dont do it because I dont want to work. I do flatbed, I WORK. I enjoy working. Just like the line from Jason Aldeans song "Fly Over States". "Just like that flatbed cowboy stacking US steel on a 3-day haul. Roads and rails under their feet. Yeah that sounds like a first class seat." Life is more about money. Its about memories. Ya you need money to survive, but living takes a lot more than that. Some people are just not cut out to be a trucker. For those whiners... Shut up, n go home. To those who want to put us new drivers down.... I guess you were born trucking. We had to start somewhere. I wasnt born with my CDL and 2 centuries of experience. Im still learning. I wouldnt trade life on the road for anything. Do I make 100/k a year? No. Am I paid decent, yes. I dont think 36cpm for a driver with less than a year of experience is bad. Plus I got a 2010 Cascadia, that is in really good shape. Full size sleeper too. This thread reminds me why I dont hang out in truck stops... All most drivers want to do is complain. And thats all they are, a driver. They are not a trucker. Let the bashing begin, Im done now.
snowblind Thanks this. -
I'm new to trucking and the forum so I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds here. I like to eat healthy and I'd like to share my secret.....but my secret won't be for everyone.
I've read every page of this thread and there's been no mention of one particular food item that I've found to be not only cheap but incredibly healthy. However it's not for everyone and some people can have allergic reactions to it. And when I say allergic reactions I'm talking severe power vomit here. Therefore if you have gastrointestinal issues (i.e. a sensitive stomach) then consult with your doctor first or don't take it at all. You've been warned!
What is my secret? Prepare yourself......and set your eyes to "stun". Micro-algae.
Yes. Micro-algae (known as Chlorella and Spirulina) that comes in both tablet and powder form. Both products are loaded with vitamins, minerals, protein, magnesium, beta carotine, etc. Chlorella and Spirulina are food supplements, not multivitamins. They have all the good stuff your body needs less the sugar, sodium, high calories, and other chemical crap that our food has.
How much does it cost? They cost about $.07 cents per tablet. Two tablets of each every day for lunch (1 each for pre-lunch 10:00am and 1 each post-lunch 2:00pm) sets me back approximately two bits ($.28). Not a bad price for a healthy lunch while not stopping for a place to eat.
An added bonus is they will detoxify your insides and give you an added energy boost as well. Bye bye caffeine coffee (at least for me). And when I say detoxify, I don't mean drug detox. I mean free radical detox.
Additional warning:
1. DO NOT EAT THESE TABLETS IF YOU HAVE STOMACH "ISSUES". But even if you don't have stomach issues, certain people have allergic reactions and you don't want to be driving while powervomiting. Test yourself first. Take one tablet off-duty and wait. If all is well then take one tablet daily for a few days to a week to get your body used to it. And for god's sake don't try living off of it for a week just to save money. Use them only to supplement 1 meal a day. Your body still needs real food. You cannot live on pills. We humans aren't designed that way.
2. This is micro-algae. Therefore the pills are green/blue-green. Your stools and urine will also be green. And I'm not talking a light green tint here. I'm talking dark, bright green. (Kinda cool if you're into that sorta thing.)
Leave a bright green floater in the truckstop and you'll have old timers on the CB talking about little green martian invaders.
BTW, my healthy breakfast costs $.62 (1 banana + homemade blueberry yogurt - not the "flavored" blueberry yogurt)
Breakfast and lunch total $.90
Healthy snacks: Walmart "Great Value" brand fruit cups. $.44 each. No sugar added. (Peaches, Pears, Pineapple tidbits, Mandarin Oranges.)
Mixed nuts, peanuts, almonds. (Expensive but worth it)
No soda, no coffee, no energy drinks. (I don't need them but I won't speak for others)
No canned fruits or vegetables. These have way too much sodium and other things I can't pronounce.
You will definitely lose weight with the reduction in calories from these food supplements. Monitor your energy levels closely. If you start feeling lightheaded or dizzy.....eat some real food quickly. Get some calories in your stomach. Remember, humans can't live on food supplement pills alone.
Stay safe out there!
